It was very tight on the impact. Bairstow joins the list of men dismissed on 99. He'll be thinking "argh" but that was a tremendous innings under the circumstances.

Bairstow lbw Maharaj 99 (Eng 362)

Umpire's call! Bairstow is out for 99! He is absolutely gutted!

All the South Africans race over to clap him on the back and shake his hand as Bairstow departs to a standing ovation. That was an innings of brilliance from Bairstow, and it is such a shame it has ended like that.

I'm behind the bowlers arm and it looks like it hit him outside the line.

    362-9

Dot. Dot. Dot. OUT! Oh no, he's been given out lbw! Bairstow was down on one knee, sweeping, missed the ball, and the finger went up.

    He's, unsurprisingly, reviewed it...

Jonny Bairstow. 99 from 141 balls. 14 fours, one six. Here we go. Spinner Keshav Maharaj is the man with the ball in hand.

Watching an animated Root in the dressing room is more nerve-jangling than the actual cricket. Olivier reaches his mark and then aborts, which draws a boo from the crowd, before he sends down a short ball that Anderson ignores. Here's the next delivery, Anderson pauses - and turns it away for a single! That's the loudest round of applause of the day.

    Bairstow 99, Anderson 4

The field is spread, Bairstow dabs into the off side, and the crowd "oooh!" as one as Bairstow takes a single! Anderson has two balls to survive, and Bairstow comes straight up the wicket to offer his advice. In the dressing room, Root hides his face in his jumper and claps nervously. Willing to bet this will be short from Olivier with Anderson in his sights.

Two more to the total as Bairstow drops and runs, and he applauds on his bat as Jimmy dives, rather pointlessly, to make his ground. Makes a good photo, mind. Another two takes Bairstow to 98...

Adam Wheeleer: Bairstow is batting exquisitely. The momentum is shifting back to England after SA took the initiative in the first hour.

    Bairstow 94, Anderson 4

Anderson's off the mark! He gets onto the back foot and cracks a short ball away for four. That's a safer shot than the reverse sweep, anyway... Anderson pushes forward to the next ones, misses, then opts to leave the final one. That was horribly uncomfortable for Anderson, and for Bairstow, watching on at the other end.

They get away with it but I hope Bairstow asks what is going on. There was no need for that from Anderson. He just has to block it.

That is hitting off stump by a whisker! Umpire's call saves Anderson! I hope Bairstow's had a word or two about those shot choices.

Now now, Jimmy. That's a terrible shot, playing deep from his crease and missing the ball. Now he's gone for a reverse sweep and short leg has claimed the catch! The umpire says no, but South Africa review. If he's hit that, then he's made a really stupid decision...

Anderson will have spinner Keshav Maharaj to contend with. Anderson's still on 0. This partnership is worth 41 and Bairstow's scored all of them.

    Bairstow 94, Anderson 0

Faf's decided to mix things up as Morne takes a well-deserved rest, and Duanne Olivier is thrown the ball. Shot! Down on one knee goes Bairstow, paddling over his shoulder, and he ends up on his backside as the ball goes for four. This is great from Bairstow but the field placing is terrible. No-one to cut off the boundaries, no close fielders to stop Bairstow taking a single from the final ball of the over - and Bairstow responds by absolutely thwacking the ball down the ground for six! That's brilliant! His mum and sister applaud from the stands. However, a four from the last ball, Bairstow looking crab-like, means Anderson will be on strike.
