Jerusalem is blasting out across Old Trafford as South Africa huddle underneath the early Mancunian sunshine.

Here comes the England batsmen, with Jonny Bairstow tippy-toeing down the steps before stopping to punch gloves with nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones.

Further to Michael Vaughan's comment on TMS yesterday that a raucous atmosphere is good at a Test match. I am afraid I must disagree.

A day out at a Test match is a treat for many cricket lovers. That experience shouldn't be spoiled by the antics of people who seem to think dressing up and drinking themselves into oblivion, throwing beer all over the place and bleating moronic chants from the lunch interval onwards is somehow good fun.

It gets very tiresome very quickly.

How did fancy dress at the Saturday of a Test become a thing? The bananas are back, along with Snow wWhite, dwarves, yellow onesies and Mrs Brown. It's brilliant, but how did it all start?

  5. How one man (and his kit bag) is giving cricket-loving refugees hopepublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

If you fancy a bit of early morning reading, then this piece from James Montague on how cricket is giving refugees in Serbia hope for the future is a beautiful starting point.

The Serbian Cricket Federation was formed to give refugees a sense of familiarity when they arrived in a new country.

At some point today, you'd think we'd get to see James Anderson bowling from the newly-named James Anderson End.

Be a bit awkward if he opens from the other one, wouldn't it?

  8. England keep close eye on Hameedpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

One of the more intriguing sub-plots yesterday was the form of Keaton Jennings.

He was handed an early life by South Africa - and he would have taken confidence from the fact that Vernon Philander was missing for the tourists - but he failed to capitalised.

Meanwhile, in the nets next to the media box, Lancashire opener Haseeb Hameed was being put through his paces by England batting coach Mark Ramprakash.

"We want Haseeb to score runs and push to get back in the team," said assistant coach Paul Farbrace after play.

Clearly it gets busy for Lancashire during a Test, so they ask the local football club for some help with parking.

It was a mixed day for England and South Africa yesterday, with little blips in each session stopping either side from taking full control of the game.

You can watch the best of yesterday's action below, including half-centuries for Ben Stokes and Joe Root, and an absolute beauty of a yorker from Kagiso Rabada.

Hiya! You well? Daniel Vettori is on my telly, giving a spin masterclass, which has cheered me right up.

Day two looks set to be an interesting one. South Africa are probably just on top, after Ben Stokes fell in the penultimate over of the day, but England's tail has wagged throughout this series. Can it do it again today?

Coffees have been drunk and the game faces are firmly on as England and South Africa arrive at Old Trafford.

There's still time for a quick selfie, though. Excellent blue steel pout on show from the skipper...
