    Moeen c du Plessis b Rabada 14 (Eng 303-8)

Moeen's sprightly little cameo is at an end. Rabada comes over the wicket and slides the ball across Moeen, and the batsman can't resist a little push at that. He's playing away from his body and in the end it's a simple catch that loops up to Faf du Plessis at second slip.

Bairstow is a very impressive cricketer. He has had a really good series with the bat but his keeping has been impressive as well. He has become a crucial all-rounder in this line-up.

50 for Bairstowpublished at 98 overs

    Eng 303-7

Bairstow cuts, and cuts nicely, for four to bring up his fifty! He raises his bat to Old Trafford as the Cookie Monster gets to his feet to applaud. The wicketkeeper has made a score of 40 or more in 17 of his last 18 Tests. That's some record.

Rabada is one of those bowlers that, if he's on a roll, he'll get seven or eight wickets.

  5. Eng 297-7published at 97 overs

    Rabada 22-7-74-3

Short from Rabada, and Moeen rolls his wrists to work another boundary, this time squarer of the wicket. The crowd liked that, and they like it even more when he gets up on his toes and cracks another couple away. A bouncer from Rabada, and that's four more! Too short again from Rabada and there's not enough zip on it to really trouble Moeen. He pulls, and pulls elegantly, down to the ropes.

Here's the first wicket to go this morning, with nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones caught attempting an expansive drives.

  7. Eng 287-7published at 96 overs

    Bairstow 45, Moeen 4

Morne Morkel's Test match in a sentence: bowl a near-perfect over, beat the bat, your mate at the other end takes a wicket and then you get flogged for four. Bairstow opens his arms and a thick edge zips away down to third man. That's a better shot from Bairstow, more in control this time as he stands up and cover drives for four. The fielder chases it all the way before sliding, knees first, into the boundary ropes. The third boundary of the over comes from leg byes as Morkel misses his mark, and Quinton de Kock gives chase.

Moeen gets a nice round of applause as he saunters to the wicket, before Rabada bangs the ball past his nose in greeting. Ooh, that's a false shot, Moeen groping forward and the ball just misses the outside edge, before a beautiful on-drive goes racing away to the ropes. I love watching Moeen. He makes batting look so effortless.

There's a bit of bounce out there. That was a nice bit of captaincy by Faf du Plessis - he brought in the extra cover and lured him into a false shot.

    Roland-Jones c Bavuma b Rabada 4 (Eng 271-7)

"Shot!" shouts Old Trafford as one as Toby Roland-Jones cracks a cover drive for four. He goes for the same shot to the next ball, but Rabada spears it a bit quicker, and TRJ lofts it up to Temba Bavuma at cover.

Sri Lanka continue to struggle in the second Test against India in Colombo.

After India posted 622-9 declared, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 183 in their first innings earlier today. They are making a better fist of it second time around, though - reaching 128-1 after being asked to follow on. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis both have unbeaten half-centuries to their name.

Morkel comes charging in, then has to pull out as some fella in the pavilion decides to go for a wander in the middle of the bowler's run up. That annoys me more than fancy dress. Ooft, Bairstow goes for an expansive drive to a wide Morkel delivery and just about avoids edging it, but Aleem Dar sticks his hand out to the side. Morkel's over-stepped, and by some way, too. A big lbw shout against Bairstow is ignored by the umpire, before we get some genuine runs as Bairstow clips the ball off his pads and away to the ropes!

Toby Roland-Jones is looking like a bit of an lbw candidate this morning. If he misses one, he'll be gone.

Right then, folks. Fancy dress: yay or nay? If you've got any photographic evidence to prove your point that fancy dress is good/bad/distracting/a fashion statement, then send it in to us. Tweet us using #bbccricket, text 81111 or email tms@bbc.co.uk. The first runs of the day come courtesy of a leg bye as Roland-Jones misses a pacey delivery, before another bye goes pinging away off Quinton de Kock's gloves.

Morne Morkel will open proceedings from the James Anderson End, and Bairstow makes him wait as he goes through his warm-up routine. Bairstow drives his way through the over, Morkel pursing his lips as he beats the outside edge once or twice, but there's no runs on offer.

Today could be the best day for batting. That bit of juice may have left the pitch and it may have dried up a little bit.

    Rabada 19-5-52-2

Ooft! The first ball goes fizzing off the outside edge as Roland-Jones get his bat slightly crossed over his front pad. I'm doing TRJ a disservice here. He's got a first-class century and eight half-centuries to his name, with an average of 22.82. Aggers has just pointed out he's more entertaining to watch than Matthew Hoggard, who "did a job in the evening and then bored everyone to tears the next morning." Poor Hoggy. A maiden to begin with as Roland-Jones swishes and misses at a lovely, full delivery.
