Edge from Morkel, and it's gone flying past second slip and down to the boundary! That went quickly but Root didn't move until very late on, and he couldn't stretch far enough across to get a hand on it. Broad yells at the sky while Root keeps his head hidden in his hands. That's a corker of a cover drive from Kagiso Rabada though, and that's four!

Neil: Nonsense to say Mo isn't a good enough Test bat, he's better than Jennings, Westley, Ballance & Malan. He could easily bat at five.

Gareth George: In Whalley Range and hearing cheers long before I know if a wicket has been taken: More tension, but less musical than Radiohead.

    Morkel 10, Rabada 14

Morne goes on the drive against Moeen, lifting the ball aerially towards the cannily placed fielder at mid-on, but it bounces in front of Broad. Oh, and again - and that's so close to a catch! Morkel tried to go over the top, Broad leapt, arms and legs akimbo, and only just missed the catch. It goes for four, and Morkel backs up that boundary with a slap straight down the ground that goes crashing into the ropes.

It was Broad that got rid of the obdurate Quinton de Kock with a nice delivery that jagged away from the batsman....

Rabada lobs a big drive at a Broad ball and narrowly avoids edging through to the keeper, which prompts lots of hands on heads in the slips. The batsman learns his lesson and leaves back-to-back leg cutters, before Broad beats him yet again with an angled delivery. Broad goes short, Rabada drives - and the ball flies away, rather unconvincingly, for four.

Morkel scrapes at the ground as Moeen eyes him carefully from the other end of the wicket. The batsman blocks out the over with no alarms.

One of the South Africa top order on this surface should have got a big score.

Morne Morkel is in, the bat looking like a toy in his giant mitts, and he plays and misses at his second ball. Ben Stokes chucks himself down at cover to get one hand to the ball, his tumbling stop keeping Morkel on strike. Broad comes around the wicket, arms pumping, and Morkel gets off the mark with a single.

It's good captaincy, bringing on Stuart Broad. I get what Geoffrey was saying about bringing Anderson back, but he's bowled a lot today and Root has four seamers to choose from. That was an absolute peach. Broad has a knack of producing a bit of magic to the really good players.

    De Kock c Bairstow b Broad 24 (SA 189-9)

Out! That's lovely from Broad, pushing the ball across De Kock, and the edge flies through to Bairstow. There's a bit of movement for Bairstow to contend with but he does well, moving low to his left to get both hands underneath the catch.

I think England don't have any other options than to bowl Moeen at this end. He's been bowling tidily, sealing one end, just like Maharaj did. But I definitely want Anderson before the close.

Quinton de Kock has played really well here. He's gone into his shell and played carefully. He's beaten by a turner from Moeen, the ball coming through quickly, before he cuts viciously for four. A shy at the stumps makes contact and is sent rather hopefully upstairs, but de Kock was well home.

Adam Wheeler: Both Maharaj and Ali have bowled well. Can't help thinking that both sides have allowed the spinners to bowl well.

David Wood: Moeen surely would not get into the team as a batsman. He would have to be good enough to bat at five.

Stuart Broad is back on as the shadows start to creep onto the Old Trafford pitch. An outside edge drifts down towards Westley in the covers, but these two seem to prefer facing Broad. They trade singles before Rabada lets a wide delivery go merrily through to the keeper.

I bet De Kock has never worked had to work so hard in his life, in his whole Test career, for his 18 runs.

Now then! Quinton de Kock comes down the pitch, the ball turns sharply, but Bairstow and de Kock are half in the shadows. The ball trickles to Bairstow, hitting him on the knee, and there's enough time for de Kock to thrusts his bat back in to stay safe. De Kock, unperturbed, comes down the track again and works away a two. That ball didn't half turn though.

Roland-Jones fires one down onto Kagiso Rabada's toes, but Rabada gets his bat down with time to spare. Up in the dressing room Morne Morkel shadow bats, practicing a leave with a flourish, as Rabada goes with hard hands to TRJ and gets a boundary, courtesy of the outside edge. Now Rabada goes through mid-wicket, flicking rather aerially and picking up another boundary.

Flemming Jensen: Is that 20 wickets in the series for Moeen? Not bad for a, ahem, 2nd spinner.
