  1. SA 172-7published at 58 overs

    Moeen 17-4-41-2

Around the wicket comes Moeen and Anderson fields with his foot, rather than his hand, as the ball comes trickling towards him. Moeen aborts his run as the wind whips across the ground, but there's only a single available. That leaves Rabada on strike to face the seamer.

One spinner has 100 wickets, the other has half a dozen, yet it's the one with six wickets who is called the first spinner for England. That's why I say the coach is talking nonsense.

  3. SA 171-7published at 57 overs

That's 20 wickets in the series for Moeen, which is his best ever haul. He's had a wonderful series. De Kock has a big swing and a miss at a Roland-Jones delivery that doesn't quite sit up for him to pull. A drive goes clattering into the stumps at the other end before an outside edge, with De Kock trying to cut, flies wide of the slip.

Moeen's done him with length. Maharaj was playing back to a full length delivery. If you pick the length wrong then in you're trouble straight away. Even at club level, you need to pick it. England have done well, they're slowly working through them.

Maharaj lbw Moeen 13 (SA 167-7)

That's as out as out can be. Maharaj went back to a ball, trying to poke at it in defence, and instead he's missed it by a mile. The ball cannons into the pads and there's no hesitation from the umpire. In fact, Maharaj starts walking as Moeen turns to appeal.

  6. 6 runs

    SA 167-6published at 55.5 overs

Hello! Where's that come from?! Maybe a touch short from Moeen but Maharaj comes skipping down the track and launches him over long-on for six! It goes relatively unnoticed by one of the stands, who are watching a beer snake that's stretching along behind the seats. Too wide from Moeen, and Maharaj rocks back to cut and find the boundary.

Nielsen: Tweeted yesterday that it looked like there will be lots of runs in the pitch for SA. Forgot about Jimmy Anderson. Silly me.

Rae: Anderson chasing a five-for!! How are we going to replace him? I dread the day when he calls it time.

  8. SA 156-6published at 55 overs

That's four! Roland-Jones just strays down the leg side and Quinton de Kock steps back to pull a short ball down towards the boundary. A single brings Maharaj on strike, and he's quick enough to jab his bat down on a yorker to see out the over.

De Kock is an Adam Gilchrist type of player, this is the perfect opportunity for him.

  10. SA 151-6published at 54 overs

    De Kock 6, Maharaj 3

Quinton de Kock blocks, blocks and blocks some more before nabbing a single. Maharaj then swats furiously across the line but Moeen dives, taking the pace off the ball as he runs to his left and cuts off the ball.

England have come alive after tea. With a couple of dropped catches it could have been better. That last one was difficult for Bairstow to hang on to. On your day, it could stick. But England have been right on it.

James Anderson is going to take an enforced break - here's Toby Roland-Jones. He starts his bustling run up and angles the ball in towards the batsman, and Maharaj just takes a step back into his crease as he defends. He looks slightly less assured as he shuffles across his stumps and Roland-Jones gets one to zip over the top of the stumps, before beating the outside edge with a fine delivery to end the over.

  13. dropped catch

Maharaj dropped on 2published at 52 overs

    SA 150-6

Now, was that a drop? Oh, it is! Nicely flighted from Moeen and Maharaj, defending, gets an edge onto the pad. It comes though at an awkward angle to Bairstow and it hits his fingertips as he starts to move! Moeen looks as mild as ever about the drop while the fielders behind the stumps look a little more animated.

  16. SA 147-6published at 51 overs

    De Kock 4, Maharaj 1

Anderson continues and de Kock manages to beat the close fielders, but Moeen is at backward point and in a perfect position to cut off any attempted singles. A tram trundles past the ground as Anderson gets one to lift, and de Kock, slightly surprised, angles his bat to run the ball towards the slips. You guessed it - a maiden.

De Kock is a wonderful stroke player but even he is looking as if he doesn't know what to do. They need to take the game to England.

Moeen's got a slip and two fielders hovering in Maharaj's eyeline as the South African batsman stretches forward in defence. Moeen beats him with a delivery that just drifts on past the bat, and a full length ball rounds off another maiden.
