Some may say Anderson is in the autumn of his career but, with an Ashes series to go, he's closing in on 500 wickets. A great spell.

These are Anderson's best figures in a Test at Old Trafford. It's been a magnificent spell. Clever, finding the movement when the pitch had gone flat, a bit of reverse swing being exploited to perfection. He's taken three wickets for six runs in 24 deliveries.

It's a brilliant spell of bowling from James Anderson from his own end. Wouldn't it be fitting for him to get five wickets? He's on top of his game right now.

    De Bruyn c Root b Anderson 11 (SA 146-6)

Is Anderson going to get a five-for from his own end? He's going about it in the right way. Another lovely delivery, a hint of away swing this time as Theunis de Bruyn goes on the drive, and a healthy outside edge goes quickly to second slip. It's Joe Root that steadies himself to get both hands to it, and Anderson gives de Bruyn a glare as he departs.

Here's why Quinton de Kock is looking so uncomfortable - he offered up this chance a few overs ago.

Quinton De Kock drives a single off Moeen and practices his shot down at the other end. You sense he's not really enjoying this situation much. De Bruyn looks a little more settled and reverse sweeps again for another couple.

  9. SA 138-5published at 47 overs

De Kock 3, De Bruyn 4

Anderson pushes the ball across De Kock, who makes a motion towards his partner that implies the ball is reversing. An edge from De Kock, the batsman coming forward to a full delivery, but it's going along the ground and Bairstow dose well to get a mitt to it and cut off a boundary. Anderson responds with a beautiful delivery that De Bruyn can't resist groping for, and there's just a hint of daylight between ball and bat as the ball zips over the stumps.

Moeen's going to carry on holding up an end. It's so nice for Root, having a spinner you can trust to be economical and keep an end tight while Anderson carries on probing from the other end. A maiden.

A draw isn't enough for South Africa. They are so much on the back foot here that 90 minutes of De Kock going for it now is what they need.

    Anderson 12-3-27-3

Anderson will continue - I'd like to see you try and get the ball out of his hands - feet kicking up as he charges in and de Kock tries to run the ball gently off the face for a single. England are sharp though, their tails firmly off, and second slip cuts the ball off. Another maiden for Anderson, who has some magnificently tidy figures to his name.

Two wickets in an over for James Anderson - first Bavuma...

    And then skipper Du Plessis.

  15. SA 137-5published at 44 overs

Quinton de Kock, rather wisely, decides to get down the other end. That brings Theunis de Bruyn on strike and he reverse sweeps, and sweeps nicely, down to the third man boundary. That was an eventful seven balls!

  16. dropped catch

De Kock dropped on 1published at 43.1 overs

    SA 132-5

Two drops in two balls! That flew again, this time from Moeen, and de Kock tried to cut it. The ball went quickly, whizzing off the top edge again, and Stokes couldn't quite cling on. It was going fast to him and he got his hands up in the general vicinity, but it was past him before he'd realised.

  17. dropped catch

    SA 132-5

The crowd have definitely perked up as every Anderson ball is greeted with ooh's from the stands. Theunis de Bruyn stands and waits, with two slips and a gully lurking, just waiting for the edge. That's a snorter from Anderson! Man, that flew off the pitch. It surprised de Bruyn, the ball smashing into the top of the bat, and Keaton Jennings at gully throws himself to his left in an attempt to cling on. That would have been a blinder if he'd taken it.

De Kock is tentative, not playing with any conviction. This is brilliant by England, they need to really apply the pressure.

  19. SA 132-5published at 42 overs

    Moeen 9-2-16-1

All going rather well for James Anderson from the James Anderson End. Meanwhile, Moeen carries on, two fresh batsmen in the form of Quinton de Kock and Theunis de Bruyn at the wicket. There's turn for Moeen too, the first delivery moving away from de Kock, who watches the ball warily into Jonny Bairstow's gloves. Moeen tosses the ball up and de Kock pops it down towards cover. A maiden.

There's a change of momentum, it's all England now. Jimmy is over the moon and the crowd are as well. Jimmy knows that if you bowl at the stumps at Old Trafford you will get rewards.
