  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41 overs

    Du Plessis b Anderson 27 (SA 132-5)

Two in the over! That was a touch lower from Anderson and du Plessis came forward to defend. The ball hit the pad of the inside edge and went through to hit the stumps. That's really clever bowling from Anderson, for both wickets - targeting the stumps and knowing he can get enough movement to beat the batsmen.

England have their noses in front. Very well done to Anderson and very well done to Joe Root for not panicking and trying anything stupid. Not well done to Bavuma.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 40.4 overs

    Bavuma b Anderson 46 (SA 131-4)

Is there anything worse than getting bowled leaving? Dearie me. Temba Bavuma left that on length, but Anderson got it to nip back and it's clipped the top of off-stump. The bails nip up into the air and Bavuma turns around just in time to see them crash to the floor. Out.

South Africa have been very defensive. If England can sneak a wicket, get them four or five down, then the hosts are ahead. Bavuma and du Plessis are looking dull.

  5. SA 131-3published at 40 overs

    Bavuma 46, du Plessis 27

Du Plessis takes a step to the side and plays defensively, but Moeen finds the outside edge and the ball drops just short of Stokes at slip. Stokes made a good effort, getting both hands down as the ball came towards him, but it was along the ground all the way. A big puff of dust comes up from the turf as Stokes goes tumbling to his right.

This is a crucial phase for South Africa. If these two can be batting at the close and score at three an over, South Africa will be 210-3 and they'll look to get as close as possible to England's total before the second new ball is taken tomorrow.

Anderson serves up something that's too short, and with no bounce it's easy for Bavuma to get up on tippy-toes and drive to the boundary. He cuts a diminutive figure, Bavuma, but this pitch has flattened out and there's no vicious bounce there to surprise him. Anderson's looking for the inswing, directing the ball into Bavuma's pads, but it's the final ball of the over that really jags back, with Du Plessis doing well to get his bat onto it.

As a Barnsley fan, Roberto, I feel your pain. Football can go away again. A change of bowling - here's James Anderson from the James Anderson End. How apt.

Every time I get a BBC Sport alert I cheer... unfortunately four of them have been telling me about my football team, Plymouth Argyle - and they're 2 down!

  10. SA 123-3published at 38 overs

    Bavuma 40, du Plessis 25

Moeen sticks out his tongue as he rolls the ball from hand to hand, and Bavuma sweeps from outside off stump to add another single. Du Plessis keeps on pressing forward, the ball thudding into the middle of the bat, before Moeen eventually strays too full and straight, and du Plessis turns his wrists for a gentle two.

I like the Stokes-Moeen bowling and slip fielder combination. Probably one of my favourites that I've seen, although Swann-Anderson was always fun. Especially when Anderson shelled one. Du Plessis gets four as Stokes strays a touch too full, and the batsman drives nicely, before a straight delivery is pinged off the pads and away through mid-wicket for another boundary. Stokes goes a little wider, trying to tempt Du Plessis, but the man is patience personified in situations like this.

Alex Hubbard‏: Stokes' catching at slip off Moeen's bowling has been excellent. Just what you need when the pressure is building.

  14. SA 112-3published at 36 overs

Moeen goes through his overs so quickly. There's no messing around, the spinner only pausing to adjust his field before he sends down a few good-length deliveries. Faf du Plessis pads up to most of them before stealing a single, with Stokes going charging off at slip to cut off the ball.

Bavuma has ticked over nicely, he has a nice tempo going. We spoke about the ability to add some touches into his game but today he has progressed well. He's looked calm, controlled, a good technique without really pushing on.

Stokes paws at the ground as he oversteps, trying to put a bit of extra fizz behind a short ball. Bavuma cracks a cut off a short delivery but he can only pick up a couple.

Beautiful shot with beautiful timing. It's nice to see Faf du Plessis in a positive frame of mind. Moeen is bowling an aggressive line, trying to induce that half-defensive shot and get that slip into play.

That's nice from the South Africa skipper, plonking a foot down the pitch and driving a short Moeen ball through the covers for four. Root blows on his hands and rubs them together as Moeen trots back in, adjusting his length and spearing four fuller deliveries down do Du Plessis.

I think if Jennings was in his normal third slip position he would have grabbed it in his paws.

  20. SA 100-3published at 33 overs

    Bavuma 35, du Plessis 8

Ooh! A tentative restart from Temba Bavuma as he defends and just manages to keep an inside edge off his stumps! Bavuma attempted to show off a few football skills as he swung around and tried to kick the ball away, but it rolled away from his stumps before his foot could make contact. Bavuma flashes outside off stump and the ball goes quickly over third slip, where Jennings is stood slightly further forward than normal, the ball flying down to the boundary off a top edge. Stokes looks thrilled.
