  1. dropped catch

Powell drops Root on eightpublished at 19.5 overs

    A dolly.

A pearler from Gabriel as he gets Root to knick one outside off and it arcs at a nice height towards Kieran Powell.

But the first slip shells it.

Root was already walking off - what a let off. Miserable drop.

Michael Street‏: I do think England should practise batting second before the Ashes.

Geoff Spring: Never understood why you have a toss before every Test match in a series. Why not just once and then alternate?

  3. Eng 43-3published at 19 overs

A tired Roach is now removed from the attack, with skipper Holder returning.

A decent if unremarkable over results in a maiden as Malan plays himself in.

  4. Root shows the waypublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

It's not been all bad by England* - Joe Root did this earlier.

*Most of it has been bad.

Now I think about it, this is clever by England. They know they will be three down for nothing repeatedly against Australia, so they are giving Malan a chance to practice.

"Trevor, we've got a cunning plan..."

  6. Eng 43-3published at 18 overs

    Root 8, Malan 2

Wise, attacking decision by Holder to remove himself for Gabriel after those early wickets by the way.

The returning quick is proving a real test for Root, who edges a full one onto his pads.

Good running from the number four as he guides the last ball through backward point for two.

Skelly2525: England showing all the complacency of the international football team - we beat them once we will beat them today

Ben Bradford: I am already having nightmares about our top order facing up to Mitchell Starc on that Waca pitch.... carnage awaits.

Shaggy: Think I preferred it when the West Indies couldn't bowl...

  8. Eng 41-3published at 17 overs

Roach - who was certainly going to come off before that wicket of Stoneman below - continues to Root.

Four disciplined balls before a horrid wide one that Root chases and is perhaps fortunate not to toe end in the direction of the slips.

The England captain slices one away for a single.

I bet everyone who whined about West Indies not offering enough of a challenge feels pretty silly now.

It was five and a half hours into the match that Malan came in at Edgbaston. It's an hour and a quarter today.

  11. Eng 40-3published at 16 overs

Malan watchful at first before he gets on top of a short delivery and pulls it away for two to get off the mark.

Massive innings for the Middlesex man, this.

  12. Eng 38-3published at 15.1 overs

Shannon Gabriel returns and squares Joe Root up - the edge just bouncing in front of the slips before it's parried away for one.

Dawid Malan to face his first ball with England firmly under pressure...

That is poor. If you are driving and get an inside edge you have got to say that is not good. He has played nicely, looked nice but got himself out.

West Indies have bowled better today with more full balls outside off stump but what is worrying for England is two of the three who everyone is looking at haven't played good shots.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15 overs

    Stoneman c Dowrich b Roach 19 (Eng 37-3)

Roach into the eighth over of his spell and sends down five fairly innocuous dot balls.

But then the sixth is pushed up and lures Stoneman into driving before flicking the inside edge and carrying straight into the gloves of Dowrich behind.

Stoneman had looked solid, showing Cook-esque patience, but then a pretty ropey, loose drive and he's gone.

    England teetering here.

This will be a test for Stoneman. He can't think too much about Australia. It's a good pitch, just think about making runs.

Iain Warburton: Is Tom Westley the new Shane Watson?

Fenners: Surely it's time for Sam Robson & Alex Hales to be given another chance?

Dan Barrett: Westley not Test class, sorry fella, out.

Harsh Iain. Not quite - Westley doesn't review every single plumb lbw at least.

  17. Eng 37-2published at 14 overs

Holder gets one to nibble off the pitch, shaping back into Stoneman and hitting the Surrey man in the midriff - probably a good decision to leave it in the end.

Nothing much doing off the rest of the over before Stoneman clips one off his pads for three as Gabriel lumbers after it.

  18. Eng 34-2published at 13 overs

Roach continues and gets Root playing and missing. But the England captain shows Westley how to play those straight balls at the pads, getting his head perfectly in line and playing late.

And that's even better - the Yorkshireman driving a long hop through the covers for four.

Shot of the day so far. Tremendous poise.

"At least England have one good batsman," quips a colleague.
