  1. drinks break

    Eng 30-2published at 12 overs

Jason Holder is on for Shannon Gabriel, who has showed the value of his pace on his return to the side so far

The Windies captain finds the edge of Stoneman's bat, but the Surrey man played it late and well enough to see it streak along the floor for four.

And that's drinks. A refreshing performance from the Windies bowlers so far (sorry).

In an amateur game I played in last year, fielding at square leg I misjudged the speed and height of the ball coming towards me and took it smack bang in the nether regions to the hilarity of everyone else, including the umpire. Managed to hold the catch though, a moral victory. The opposing captain, a certain Jack Skelton, was less than sympathetic.

    Tom in London

In my defence Tom, it was absolutely hysterical. I did also have to laugh at my injury last night - I ran in a fair way to celebrate the catch before someone pointed out my hand was bleeding.

  3. Eng 26-2published at 11 overs

All too familiar for England as they fall two down for not much.

Not familiar that Cook is one of the men back in the hutch.

Also not familiar that it's truly threatening Windies pace bowling that is responsible.

Great start for the visitors - captain Root to the rescue once more? Stoneman has been solid in fairness at the other end.

That is a problem for Tom Westley. You can see his head position going to the off side. It doesn't allow your foot to go to the ball.

He has done it three or four times. He can't get a base to play the shot and is almost playing on the run with no balance on the left foot.

It is because his eyes are outside the line of the ball. Already in his four Test matches I can see how to bowl to him. You bowl in the channel to move him across and then at his pads.

Westley lbw Roach 3 (Eng 26-2)

    Straight. Full. Plumb.

More reward for this superb opening spell - this time for Roach as he goes wide on the crease and pushes it in at Westley's pads, with the Essex batsman playing around it.

No need to review that - as plumb as they come.

    Joe Root, come on down.

  6. Reward for improved Windiespublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 25 August 2017

Mr Vaughan is right - this Windies opening pair started solid, if unspectacular, but have upped the quality in the last few overs and showed much more threat than at Edgbaston.

Here's their reward - the prize scalp of Alastair Cook for just 11.

This is real quality from Gabriel. Westley is having to play the ball because in the previous over the bowler got the ball to nip back.

The 10 overs today have been 10-times better than what we saw from the West Indies last week.

  8. Eng 24-1published at 10 overs

Gabriel to Westley - edged! But lands just short of Holder in the slips. Westley was squared up horribly there.

No real menace in the first seven overs of the day but plenty about now.

Westley gets off the mark, scuffing it off his pads into the leg-side for one before Stoneman slices it away for a couple.

  9. Eng 21-1published at 9 overs

Stoneman is getting in behind and seems to be seeing the ball well early on, a solid drive off Roach raising a couple.

The Windies paceman comes back with a doozy, but can't find the edge. The first hint of movement.

Gabriel looks the kind of bowler who is awkward to face when you first go in.

He is trying to pin you on the back foot but the full ball becomes a threat.

  12. Eng 19-1published at 8 overs

Tom Westley the new man in, looking for a big innings to state his case for a place on the plane to Australia.

Slightly nervy start as he edges into the top of his pads but the Essex man plays out the rest of the over.

Good stuff from Gabriel, the Windies look a lot more threatening with his pace.

Good cricket. That is the extra pace from Gabriel that the West Indies were lacking at Edgbaston.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 7.2 overs

    Cook c K Hope b Gabriel 11 (Eng 19-1)

Stoneman scrambles a quick single - Cook might've been out with a direct hit.

The former captain is out now though - a lovely, quick ball on the angle over the wicket from Gabriel that Cook nicks to Kyle Hope at third slip.

On second viewing, it's an excellent catch from Hope, the ball dying to his right.

  15. Eng 18-0published at 7 overs

Roach strays wide, Cook puts him away for four in his favourite area. Standard.

Better off the next five balls but very comfortable for England so far.

  17. Eng 14-0published at 6 overs

Gabriel still zippy and going straight at Stoneman, forcing him to play most deliveries before the opener drops his hands under a short ball.

Another maiden but nothing too taxing for Stoneman there.

  19. Eng 14-0published at 5 overs

    Cook 7, Stoneman 7

Roach now round the wicket to Cook, who struggled against Morne Morkel from this angle earlier in the summer.

That's nice from Roach - a strangled appeal as he gets Cook playing and missing.

That's not so nice from Roach - short and hung out in Cook's favoured zone as the opener duly clips it away for four.

    Better to finish.

Gabriel is on target and making Cook and Stoneman play. I don't think he will like the pitch very much. It is like the ones back home - grey.
