That was the exact same ball Warner got earlier in the day from Wood. Travis Head was all squared up.

If anyone would, Wood would? If a woodpecker would peck wood?

Anyway, Mark Wood hitting the deck hard and bowling superbly. Travis Head plays across the line, edges it and it's whistles past a diving Joe Root at slip. Can't really put that down as a chance but what a delivery.

Ben Sutton: Take a bow Mark Wood. Such an important wicket that one. England getting wickets at good times.

As the players re-hydrate with a drinks break, here's another chance to see that all-important wicket of Steve Smith.

  5. Aus 183-4published at 34 overs

    Moeen 2-0-5-0

Glenn Maxwell yet to get off the mark after seven balls as Moeen races through another fine over.

It may still not be full but the England crowd have perked up a bit in these cloudy conditions. Don't get too excited yet - plenty of time still left in this innings.

    Two from the over.

Australia have got the platform for a 300-plus score but those four wickets that have fallen give England hope of keeping them down to 260-270.

  7. Aus 181-4published at 33 overs

    Head 10, Maxwell 0

    Tremendous over from Wood. Wicket-maiden.

So what is a good score for Australia from this position?

The Aussie captain was clearly frustrated with himself as he walked back to the pavilion. You could hear from the sound of the ball hitting the bat that it he didn't connect well. A fine innings nevertheless.

Big wicket for England. It looks like Smith was set for the normal pace that Mark Wood bowls, but it was a loosener. There was no foot movement; it didn't stop in the pitch and there was no puff of dust. He's batted really, really well but he can't blame anyone else.

    Smith c Plunkett b Wood 56 (Aus 181-4)

The danger man is gone. Mark Wood is brought back into the attack and strikes with his first ball. Smith shuffles across his stumps, looks to drive, doesn't quite get hold of it and miscues it straight to Liam Plunkett at mid-off. Big wicket.

Remarkable to think that Adil Rashid was left out of the England team at the start of this tournament. From that seven-over spell he didn't concede a single boundary. There were 20 dot balls, and 18 singles, a textbook example of why slow bowling works in the fastest forms of cricket.

  11. Aus 181-3published at 32 overs

    Smith 56, Head 10

It's spin for spin as Moeen Ali replaces Rashid.

Moeen, whose hair seems to be growing back fairly fast, didn't turn his arm against New Zealand. But there's little sign of any rust - he tosses up six good deliveries.

With Rashid out of the attack for now, here's another chance to see how the Yorkshireman dismissed Henriques.

It's only Steve Smith's third fifty against England in 23 ODI innings - and his second in England in 14 innings in this format.

Steve Smith is turning it on for Australia. He's the danger man for England - he needs to be removed if they are to keep this total down.

    Aus 178-3

Steve Smith reaches his half-century with a sublime push through the off side for four.

A captain's innings - hardly any celebration as he just acknowledges the dressing room with a simple nod. He knows there is still a lot of work to do.

He is on 54 from 71 balls.

They talk about players so exciting to watch they can empty bars. They clearly haven't been to Birmingham on a Saturday lunchtime. Don Bradman could have trotted out to join Steve Smith and no-one would be leaving their spots in the long Edgbaston queues.

  16. Aus 172-3published at 30 overs

    Smith 49, Head 8

Adil Rashid, the pick of England's bowlers. He's stemmed the flow of runs with another tidy over, just two from it.

He offers some flight, lofting one up to Head who is happy to just take the single. No need to take any big risks.

Rhydian Morgan: I can see a decent amount of empty seats @ Edgbaston - how is every seat not sold for a massive game like Aus vs Eng?!

  18. Aus 170-3published at 29 overs

You feel that another wicket may just swing the pendulum towards England.

Travis Head looks in good nick. Offered a fraction of width from Plunkett, he cuts past backward point for four.

Better from Plunkett, tucks him up with a tighter line which finds the handle of the bat. Could have gone anywhere but Head survives.

Here's another chance to appreciate Morgan's fine catch to dismiss Aaron Finch...

He was almost trying to clear the front leg and smack it over mid-wicket. He wasn't able to get under it. Plunkett took it and almost put it in his pocket - very cool.
