As a Yorkshire supporter I really am angry at the lack of use of a so in-form Bairstow. If England are never going to use him why not let him play for Yorkshire on Tuesday? By the time he gets a knock he will be so rusty. A total waste. How many chances is Roy to be given?

    Wood 5-0-20-1

It seems remarkable that Steve Smith started his international career as a spinner who batted at eight. He's so important for Australia now with the bat, in all three formats. The sun has come out at Edgbaston, which is a nice surprise. Wood continues, steaming in towards Finch, who clips a leg-side delivery off his toes for a single.

Here is the wicket to go, a touch fuller from Wood, and Warner could only get a leading edge through to Buttler behind the stumps.

Big shout for lbw against Smith! He left a straight delivery from Ball, bat hoisted high above his head, and it struck him on the back leg. That was high, though, and probably bouncing well over off stump. The captain then stands tall, no foot movement needed as he drives Ball beautifully through the covers for four. Warner's dismissal hasn't broken Australia's stride.

That was a wicket at a nice time. Australia had made a cracking start to this game. England were bowling too short but that one was a bit fuller, going across Warner, and he nicked off.

  6. Aus 45-1published at 8 overs

    Smith 1, Finch 21

Steve Smith's the new man in, and Mark Wood greets him with a peach that beats his hesitant push forward. The Australia captain is off the mark though as Morgan makes a mess of a bit of fielding at cover, the ball bobbling straight through his hands. Wood follows that up with a leggy delivery, looking for the lbw, but Finch tickles it fine for a boundary. Wood grabs his cap and chunters into it.

Perhaps England have been guilty of bowling a touch too short - that was a better length, going across the left-hander. He just turned the face of the bat and got a leading edge. Great wicket for England - very handy to see the back of Warner.

    Warner c Buttler b Wood 21 (Aus 40-1)

Full, edge behind, caught! That's better from Wood, drawing Warner forward with a fuller delivery, and the ball nipped off the edge and through to Buttler, who gets both hands to that. The fireworks go off as Warner departs.

Aaron Finch hasn't got a lot of form behind him, he's just trying to bludgeon his way into a bit of nick.

  10. Aus 39-0published at 7 overs

    Warner 21, Finch 16

Finch, who hasn't been in the best form recently, goes big again, but the ball sticks in the turf and they have to settle for two. He looks a touch uncomfortable as Ball spears one into the pads and it flicks up towards Morgan at mid-wicket, but there's no bat on it. Short from Ball, but again, not by much, and Warner is on to it in no time. A slight crouch and he throws his arms through the shot and pulls the ball down to the boundary.

I'm not sure England have got their lengths right this morning. That's too straight from Wood and it's so easy for Warner to dink him off his pads and away to the boundary. An over enthusiastic bit of fielding from Jason Roy, shying at the stumps for no real reason, means Australia can nab a sneaky single as the ball rebounds into the field. Roy looks thoroughly irked.

The ball has done a bit this morning but Australia's openers were having none of it. I'm not entirely sure short deliveries are the way to go, mind...

  14. Aus 25-0published at 5 overs

'Onion left out in the open' is a cracking turn of phrase. Short from Ball and Warner is having none of it, another huge, full-blooded heave whizzing away to the boundary. That sat up nicely for him. This pair are so aggressive when they get going, even with the running, as Finch takes on Morgan's arm at cover and wins.

Wood, after watching the first ball of his over go clattering into the ropes, readjusts and bowls a touch fuller. Australia steal a single here and there to keep England on their toes.

Ooft! That's dismissive from Warner! Wood drops short but just barely, and Warner pulls with aplomb, absolutely blasting it over the field and down to the mid-on boundary. That's damaged the ball, in fact, and the umpires have to do a bit of tidying up before Wood can get his mitts back on it.

Not even half full around Edgbaston at the moment. Biggish queues to get through the security checks, but nothing more than a week ago for India v Pakistan, when the stands were packed for the first ball.

  19. Aus 11-0published at 3 overs

    Warner 1, Finch 10

Shot! That's one way to get off the mark, Finch on the front foot and walloping Ball down the ground to the boundary. There's none of this poking or prodding around from the Australia opener, as a nasty swipe across the line gets an leading edge that runs down to the boundary. Streaky, but it's done the job. Ten runs from the over!

Strike! That was three play-and-misses in a row from Finch. He was launching himself at it. Three strikes and you're out in baseball!
