    Eng 127-3

Bairstow gets off strike with a single before Root cracks a short ball, looking for the boundary, but a fielder cuts it off on the ropes. The scores are level, Bairstow pops the ball up into the covers - and that's a very comfortable win for England!

Three runs to win, and it's Peter Chase who will bowl what you'd assume is the final over.

  3. Eng 124-3published at 19 overs

    Root 48, Bairstow 8

Free hit called as Thompson over-steps, and Bairstow slaps it away into the covers, but it's cut off by the fielder. That's four from Root though. He takes a step back, cracks the ball through square, and it races across the outfield.

The good news is, if this game finishes early, there is a ticket for Bob Dylan waiting for me in Nottingham tonight. It's the only thing me and Bob Willis have in common - we both like Bob Dylan.

Bob added 'Dylan' as an extra middle name, such is his obsession with Bob. Graeme hasn't gone that far. Yet.

Porterfield takes an age to fiddle about with his field as he brings Stuart Thompson back on. All that arm-waving goes to waste, though, as Thompson bowls a horrible leg-side delivery that Root tickles down to the boundary. Bairstow then gets in on the act with a straight drive that makes a glorious sound off the bat.

If I was a gambling man, I'd back England to finish this before lunch. And if I was Irish, I'd want this game to finish too. You don't want to wait for 40 minutes.

    Target 127

100 up for England, courtesy of a Bairstow thwack into the covers. Chase then gets Root playing edgily and away from his body, but the ball ricochets into Gary Wilson's leg at slip and away for a boundary. Chase responds by tucking Root up for room.

  9. We play on - for nowpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

Now, we were supposed to go off for lunch at 14:30 BST. But, rather than going off with England needing 28 runs, the umpires have taken the extra 15 minutes available. So now it's a question of, can England knock 28 runs off in 15 minutes? You'd like to think so, although I can't think of anything more cricket-y than England trooping off for a cuppa, still needing three runs to win.

  10. Eng 99-3published at 17 overs

Murtagh continues and Root is watchful, flicking into the on-side. It's been a belter of a day for his brother, Billy, who has made his first one-day century for Nottinghamshire.

The one heartening bit from an Ireland perspective has been Peter Chase, who has bowled with good direction.

Here's Jonny Bairstow and he's struck on the pad first ball! Aleem Dar shakes his head though; it's sliding down leg.

Morgan out for 10published at 15.3 overs

    Eng 99-3

Eoin Morgan does get out quite a bit, doing that. A short ball from Chase, Morgan tries to swing it over leg but he only gets the toe-end of the bat. Kevin O'Brien comes charging around and clings on while he's on the move. Excellent work.

    That's a cracking catch from Kevin O'Brien!

  15. Watch: Hales caught by Porterfield off Chase's bowlingpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

It was a typically entertaining innings from Alex Hales but this is how it ended, caught by Ireland skipper William Poterfield off Peter Chase...

At Tim Murtagh's pace, you can't bowl that short to Eoin Morgan.

  17. Eng 96-2published at 15 overs

    Root 29, Morgan 10

England aren't even strolling to victory. They're just meandering along. Murtagh continues and it's a quiet over before Morgan leans back and scythes his bat down on a short delivery. The ball flies in front of square and smacks into the boundary rope. Lunch is at half past two - can England knock the remaining runs off before then?

    Root 26, Morgan 6

Peter Chase has bowled tidily to pick up both wickets, but he just drifts slightly onto Morgan's pads and he's whipped away for a couple. He straightens his line up and Morgan and Root drop the ball here and there. There's a few glum faces in the Ireland line-up now.

Murtagh v Morgan - who will win the battle of the county team-mates? First strike goes to Morgan, who takes a step down and cracks a straight drive down to the boundary, Murtagh only able to stand and watch it fly past. Murtagh responds by playing a bit of football with the ball, and bowls tidily for the rest of the over.
