  1. Ire 5-0published at 1 over

    Joyce 4, Stirling 0

It'll be David Willey to bowl the first ball of the international summer - it's full, and Ed Joyce pops it off his toes for a single. In fact it's a very full over from Willey and Joyce driving nicely down the ground for a couple. Stirling faces the last ball of the over and throws a lovely drive at it, but it's cut off by the fielder.

Ireland are very much the second favourites. When you are that your best bet is to get runs on the board. Individuals are more likely to get the heebie jeebies when chasing. I think it is Ireland's best chance of winning.

The England team are making their way out with their new one-day kit. Navy blue with red lines across the bottom. It looks better than it sounds, honestly.

They're followed closely by Ireland openers Paul Stirling and Ed Joyce.

The top six today will be the same top six that batted in Bangalore in 2011. Some of them are in their thirties but, arguably, most of them have started the season in reasonable form.

There aren't many options. Until the younger talent comes along, this is what Ireland have.

The concern is the bowling - it's less experienced.

Despite some famous meetings in the past, this is the first time England have hosted Ireland in an ODI.

Kevin O'Brien's almighty innings in 2011, that ferocious 113 from 63 balls, sent England crashing out of the World Cup.

It's a similar team today to the one that faced England six years ago in Bangalore.

  9. 'We need guys in form'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    England v Ireland

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We would have bowled as we don’t quite know what a good score is on here. We have some high quality players missing which shows how strong we are to put out this side.

"Adil Rashid is in instead of Moeen Ali as he is a bigger threat as he is able to turn it both ways. There hasn’t been much between our back-up keeping.

"Jos Buttler is at the IPL, which is great to see, but for these games it is a chance for Sam Billings to come out and be a replacement for Jos should he get injured.

"We have picked a strong squad. We need guys in form. It is a big year for us building to the 2019 World Cup."

  10. No Moeen for Englandpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    England v Ireland

Eoin Morgan confirms England will play just one spinner today in Adil Rashid, with Moeen Ali left out. Rashid did bowl very well in the series against the West Indies.

Steven Finn and Ben Duckett also miss out - so in essence, England are playing their Champions Trophy squad, minus the players who are still out at the IPL.

  11. 'Runs on the board'published at 10:40 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    England v Ireland

Ireland captain Will Porterfield: "It looks a good surface so we can try and get some runs on the board. We have played an extra batter today so we want to post a decent total. We have a couple of all-rounders so we are pretty balanced. We have six ODIs over the next two weeks and that starts today."

  13. Ireland win toss and batpublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    England v Ireland

Up goes the coin, and it's William Porterfield that calls correctly.

Ireland will bat first and they've got an extra batsman in their ranks to try and amass a big score. Not that Eoin Morgan is too bothered about losing - he would have had a bowl first anyway.

Hello! Welcome to the first day of England's international summer. Excited?

The toss is first on a sunny, if breezy, Bristol. Joe Root is letting the Yorkshire contingent down by wearing a bobble hat.

    Are you ready?

The sun is shining. The first day of the season is here. It's like Christmas, except warmer.

We've got so much ahead of us. The Champions Trophy. South Africa. West Indies. All are heading here this summer.

But first up, it's Ireland. Buckle up...
