Dad and I managed to listen to TMS throughout my sister's graduation ceremony, unfortunately for her boyfriend he was sat next to my mum so wouldn't take a headphone!

  3. Eng 82-2published at 12 overs

    Target 127

Short and wide from Chase, and Root leaps on it, pulling it away to the boundary. A slight cry of 'Roooooot' goes around the stands as he fist-bumps with his new batting partner, Eoin Morgan.

That was a very good catch from Porterfield. The ball was straight up in the air but the wind is swirling. Will Porterfield has a very safe pair of hands.

  5. wicket

Hales falls for 55published at 11.3 overs

    Eng 78-2

A miscue from Hales, looking to get things over quickly, and he skied the ball high into the air. It's windy out there and the ball was whirling around, but Porterfield judged it well. He came pedaling forward from backward point, saw the ball close to his chest before falling to the ground. Lovely work.

Oops. High into the air from Hales, and he's out. Well held, William Porterfield.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Test Match Special but this has been one of the more depressing days I've had.

  8. Eng 78-1published at 11 overs

It's quite sedate out there now. Even the crowd have fallen quiet, just a gentle hum of noise. George Dockrell fires through another over, England content to take the singles. This will be over before lunch.

  9. 50 runs

50 for Halespublished at 10.1 overs

    Eng 75-1

That's 50 for Alex Hales, and it's a magnificent effort. He struggled in the first over and since then it's been brutal. He brings up a half-century in style, driving for yet another boundary. He's brought up his 50 from 33 deliveries, with ten boundaries.

  10. Eng 69-1published at 10 overs

    Root 21, Hales 46

Shot. Even Root stopped to admire that, an on-drive timed perfectly. Thompson brings his line a little straighter and fuller, and that's a relatively quiet over from Ireland's point of view.

  12. Eng 61-1published at 9 overs

Dearie me, George Dockrell is getting some treatment. Hales gets on one knee and sweeps hard, before smashing a straight drive past the tumbling bowler. More singles are worked here and there as more people gather on the balconies of the flats overlooking the ground.

Ralph Brooker: And batting's their strong suit! Dear oh dear.

Alex Elliot: So much for getting home and watching a bit of cricket after work.

Fenners: I suspect if they get the chance Ireland will bowl first at Lord's just to extend their playing time on the hallowed turf.

  14. Eng 55-1published at 8 overs

Stuart Thompson is going to replace Tim Murtagh, who may still be smarting from that last over. Thompson, stockily built, charges in and he's worked away for a couple of singles by both batsmen. Root ends the over by yelling at somebody who is fidgeting around in front of the sightscreen.

  15. Eng 51-1published at 7 overs

    Target 127

Ireland turn to spin, with George Dockrell on for a twirl. Mind you, it's not made much difference, Hales unfurling an off-drive that races to the boundary and brings up England's 50. That seems to have come along in no time at all.

It's been a good day so far for the Roots...

  17. Eng 46-1published at 6 overs

    Hales 32, Root 12

Ooh. Perfect line and length from Murtagh and Hales, pushing forwards, just narrowly edges it past a diving Niall O'Brien. Hales responds by going aerial, lifting the ball up and over the close fielders. It's not going well for Ireland, and Hales adds insult to injury with another gorgeous cover drive.

  19. Eng 31-1published at 5 overs

Shot! Oh, this is an expensive over. Root gets the runs going with a stonking cut, before Chase oversteps and the ball goes to the boundary. In fact the free hit has been given the same treatment - stand still, focus, bang. Away the ball goes.

In the midst of all that, Niall O'Brien looks to have dropped a catch off Hales. Hales was trying to tickle a delivery down the leg side and it took a touch of glove. It was straight in and straight back out of O'Brien's gloves.

  20. Eng 17-1published at 4 overs

Murtagh continues, left arm bent, almost static at his side, and he gets Hales to waft loosely at a delivery that bounces on the batsman. Eurgh, that's ugly from Hales. He comes down the pitch, swings and misses by miles. Niall O'Brien throws down the stumps, but Hales was home.
