  1. wicket

Balbirnie edges behindpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Ire 81-3

That was a nice delivery from Ball, shaping in slightly, and Balbirnie doesn't really do more than waft his bat tamely at it. The ball clips the edge and Sam Billings, diving across to his right, takes a good catch in front of Root at slip.

  2. wicket

    Balbirnie c Billings b Ball 30 (Ire 81-3)

Hello, another wicket! That seems to have come out of nowhere.

We haven't noticed Sam Billings yet, which suggests he is doing a good job behind the stumps. He is a bit like David Fairclough. He is the super sub. When there is a slot in the side he comes in and does a job.

  4. Ire 81-2published at 17 overs

A man dressed as the Pink Panther is getting some directions from a steward. As you do. Plunkett continues, the wind picking up across the ground. It's a good over from Plunkett, full and straight, and Balbirnie and Porterfield settle for a few singles.

  5. Balbirnie hits a boundarypublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Ire 78-2

And here is Andy Balbirnie in action, hitting one of his four fours so far...

  6. Ire 78-2published at 16 overs

    Balbirnie 27, Porterfield 7

Shot! That's nice from Balbirnie, on tiptoes and smashing the ball square for four. And again! Ball drags the ball down the leg side, and Balbirnie gives it a little tickle off his hip for another boundary. Ball readjusts, and Balbirnie goes back to defending.

Don't forget, you can also listen to ball-by-ball commentary of all seven matches in the One-Day Cup here.

Surrey v Middlesex and Worcestershire v Yorkshire are among today's fixtures.

  8. Ire 69-2published at 15 overs

Plunkett bangs in a short ball but there's no real pace in the wicket and it sits up nicely for Porterfield, who cracks it away with a certain amount of disdain. Runs are proving hard to come by, mind, and that's a maiden for Plunkett.

  10. Ire 69-2published at 14 overs

If someone wants to send us cake, we wouldn't be opposed to that. That's the happiest I've seen Graeme Swann look.

That's cracking from Will Portfield, Ball giving him too much width, and he crashes away into the covers. Alex Hales has it covered down on the boundary, though.

  11. A face of utter joypublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Ire 64-2

  12. Ire 64-2published at 13 overs

Double change, actually, with Liam Plunkett on. He is, to coin a phrase, an absolute unit. He looks thoroughly unimpressed as Balbirnie squirts an outside edge through the slips, which sees Joe Root get shifted from first slip to second. And, predictably, the next ball goes flying through where Root was just stood for another boundary. There's a wry smirk from everyone involved.

  14. Ire 54-2published at 12 overs

A change of bowling, with Jake Ball on for a spell. He keeps up England's tactic of bowling full and straight, and there's just a single from the over. There's a slight lull in proceedings, Ireland just trying to regroup after losing two quick wickets.

Wood is 10mph quicker than Willey so he can get driven easier. Willey, when he gets his length right, can be very dangerous as the ball doesn't come on as much and he gets that movement through the air.

  16. Ire 53-2published at 11 overs

    Willey 6-0-34-1

That wicket has done Willey's rhythm some good. He beats Balbirnie twice, the Ireland man pushing forward tentatively. Meanwhile, in the slips, Joe Root is moving his hands up and down like he's playing air drums. It's a tad breezy out there.

  17. Watch as Joyce is trapped lbwpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

And in the next over, David Willey struck, trapping Ed Joyce lbw. And, guess what, you can watch that too...

  18. Watch as Wood bowls Stirlingpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

Here's the first wicket of the international summer - and you have to love the sight of bails flying off the stumps.

Watch Mark Wood bowl Paul Stirling below.

  19. Ire 50-2published at 10 overs

No change yet in the bowling as Mark Wood continues, propelling himself like a 100m sprinter at the crease. He keeps it tight, helped out by Balbirnie's inability to connect with a big pull and an Alex Hales dive at cover. Screw turned.

It is nice to see England back, wearing Barcelona's third kit. I think Ed Smith was right when he said it looks a bit like a credit card. The T20 kit, though, is truly horrific.
