    That's it at Lord's where Steven Croft and Ryan McLaren wander off with their wickets intact. Lancashire still have plenty of work to do, after Toby Roland-Jones, Tim Murtagh and Steven Finn took the wickets.

  4. Essex limp to the close

    Hampshire 254 v Essex 33-5 (24 overs)

    Hampshire are well on top now and it will require quite a recovery for Essex. They have Ryan ten Doeschate and Dan Lawrence at the crease for tomorrow at least.

    They will begin the day 221 runs behind. Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards did the majority of the damage.

    Warwickshire's 219 looks by no means imposing but it may yet be enough to at least make this match competitive.

    Chris Wright dislodging Kraigg Brathwaite near the end helped with that, but Jeetan Patel's counter-attacking 100 - his third for Warwickshire and second against Yorkshire - roused the Bears and this match.

    His scoring-rate was rapid - 47 balls for his first 50 - but his strokes were controlled and classy. He owed little to luck.

    For an encore he took a fine low catch to see off Brathwaite, and was the only bowler to cause Adam Lyth any notable difficulties in the last session.

    Champions Essex ending day one firmly on the back foot at the Ageas Bowl. Fidel Edwards beats nightwatchman Sam Cook for pace to make it five wickets for the session!

    Sussex took the wicket of Keaton Jennings (6) just before the close and they'll be pleased with that.

    Durham could certainly have done with Jennings seeing out the night! Out he goes, lbw. And off they go for the night.

    It's Sussex's day, it would seem.

    Northants 194 v Notts 80-5 (32 overs)

    Nottinghamshire survive to the close with Billy Root and nightwatchman Luke Wood at the crease. They've not had it all their own way in pursuit of Worcestershire at the top of Division Two.

    Surrey 42-0 (14 overs) v Somerset 269

    Surrey are very pleased to reach the close without loss. Somerset have bowled excellently and it's taken some battling stuff to hold them off.

    This one is pretty evenly poised ahead of a potentially fascinating day two.

    Ravi Bopara has failed in his task to reach the close unbeaten. Second change bowlers Gareth Berg and Ian Holland are into the attack for Hampshire and its the former who does the damage, beating Bopara's defences.

    Hamphire are finishing strongly. Could Essex's unbeaten record be in danger?

    Surrey's openers have one more over to navigate tonight, before the close.

    Rory Burns has passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season.

    Middlesex 233 v Lancashire 95-5 (27.4 overs)

    Toby Roland-Jones picks up the prize wicket of Shiv Chanderpaul. The West Indian, as ever, battled hard for his 29 runs, but he edges to Adam Voges at second slip who takes a good catch.

    Lancashire need lower-order contributions of the ilk of Roland-Jones and Ollie Rayner.

    Yorkshire trail by 157 runs with nine wickets remaining in their first innings. Adam Lyth is unbeaten on 35.

    Yorkshire's opening partnership is broken after 82 minutes, as Kraigg Braithwaite is caught at first slip. In comes Steven Patterson now, to join Adam Lyth (35 not out) in the middle.

    Nottinghamshire are 73-4, trailing promotion rivals Northamptonshire by 121 runs in their first innings.

    Also on day one, Glamorgan are 336-7 and Kiran Carlson is still unbeaten on a whopping 133 from 259 balls. He's helped them recover from 63-4 at home to Gloucestershire.

    Meanwhile, Sussex are now 346 all out at Durham.

  18. Essex digging in

    Hampshire 254 v Essex 23-3 (16.1 overs)

    Dan Lawrence and Ravi Bopara have dug the trenches in their attempt to get to the close with no further wickets lost.

    The pair have scored just 11 runs from the last nine overs. Steady on lads.

    Shiv Chanderpaul (22 not out) and Steven Croft (10 not out) are the men for a tricky situation and they're proving it at Lord's with a partnership of 19 runs.

    Steven Finn and James Harris are plugging away with the ball.
