Patterson's 78-run eighth-wicket stand with Matthew Fisher was the key.

With Essex striking early there are shades of 1992 here. That was the year that Essex last won the championship and the key victory came away at Hampshire when they were forced to follow on 151 behind and ended up winning by 79 runs.
Something similar today would be the cherry on the cake for Essex and could put Hampshire in serious trouble going into the final round. Hampshire look nervous to say the least and Essex sense the chance of completing a great turnaround.
Somerset 269 & 242-8 (75 overs) v Surrey 433
Key moment. Ryan Patel bowls Pete Trego and Somerset are in real, real danger of losing now.
Trego had added a cracking 68 but Somerset only have two wickets left now and their lead is just 78 runs.
He batted really nicely once again, Trego, hitting 11 boundaries in 83 balls.

James Weighell (37 not out) and Brydon Carse (12 not out) have slowed the Sussex charge, putting on 49 runs together for the eighth wicket.
