Rashid has only batted once in the series before today, scoring seven in Adelaide, but he gets off the mark in pleasing style with an upper cut to the boundary off Starc. Just the one ODI fifty to date for the Yorkshireman and that highest score of 69 would be timely here.

Jack: What's it gonna take for Moeen Ali to be dropped? Give him a break he's just getting worse.

  3. Eng 216-6published at 40 overs

    Root 46, Rashid 0

The batsmen crossed, allowing Root to pull two more runs out to deep mid-wicket. The final 10: what can England muster? will they be all out? We shall see.

I still think this is a 300-plus pitch but the issue is the execution of a couple of shots.

Moeen just didn't get to it.

A poor shot from Moeen - and we've heard that a few times this winter. Another perplexing innings from the left-hander and he lofts Zampa straight into the hands of long-off.

    Run-rate 5.41

A nice Root run-a-ball century may make those IPL teams rue their decision not to bid for him. No fifties for England yet though, despite starts for each of the top four. Moeen ambles through for a single off Starc, unaware that Smith's throw from short mid-wicket would have run him out had it hit the timbers.

Root is a really good manipulator of the field and you wonder if that doesn't get taken into consideration when people assess T20 stars.

  9. Eng 205-5published at 38 overs

    Root 39, Moeen 3

A delicate little reverse sweep from Root to Zampa harvests another brace and he keeps the bowling with a single from the final ball. What's a par score? We can't look at the history books of course because the pages are empty for this new stadium.

Joe Root can still hit fours and sixes, but he's more calculated. The key is to limit the dot balls and Root does that really well.

  11. Eng 200-5published at 37 overs

    Root 35, Moeen 2

Plenty of England followers in the crowd, a thickset gentleman is blowing heartily on a trombone. It's a 55,000 capacity for cricket, losing 5,000 because of the sightscreens at each end and up goes the Mexican wave. Root gets a top-edge to Tye that falls safely at fine-leg and brings him two more.

Matt Chapman: Poor game management again by England. 8 runs off the over already and 15 overs left. Just knock it for a single. Why take such a risk so early?

Bairdy: Not confident that England will make a score that is competitive now that Butler is gone. Moeen, I hope you've been working hard in those nets!!

  13. Eng 194-5published at 36 overs

    Root 31, Moeen 1

Moeen Ali the new man, no Chris Woakes to provide some useful runs in this match remember. Woakes averages 170 in the series, Moeen 15. But the left-hander is off the mark at least.

That added bounce was Buttler's undoing. It's a big loss for England, who are under a little bit of pressure. They've built their platform but they need to kick on from here.

Ah Jos. One stunning 104 metre six but that's your lot today. Going for another, not quite timing it and caught at long-off.

As powerful and destructive as Buttler's hitting is, he times the ball as well as anybody.

  17. Eng 184-4published at 34 overs

    Root 29, Buttler 14

Leg-spinner Zampa again, only one four conceded in his first five overs. Buttler with that short 63m straight boundary surely in his sights, but it's a blonde lady in a navy dress billowing in the wind that catches his eye - only because she is moving behind the bowler's arm.

  18. ouch!

    Eng 177-4published at 33 overs

    Run-rate 5.36

Andrew Tye returns after 1-15 from his opening four overs and he pins Root on the sponsor's badge - that's not a euphemism. The golden boy drops to his haunches and takes a moment to regain his composure. Plenty of life in this pitch still and two short ones sail over the batsmen's heads, called wide.

  19. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 32 overs

    Eng 172-4

I really like the roof at this new venue, it has a nautical air, appropriate really considering the stadium's proximity to the Swan river. Buttler collects his first boundary, the 16th of the innings, quickly on to a Hazlewood short one and rolling the wrists to pull it away through mid-wicket.

The most distinctive noise in a cricket ground is the hum you get midway through a day. It's always prevalent at Lord's. It's nice to hear the pleasant hum enveloping this ground currently.
