Root has been fabulous in this format, he comes in quietly and finds angles, going at a run-a-ball.

Great touch from Joe Root. Mitchell Marsh returns for a second spell and is only a little out in line.

Root just lets the ball flick his bat and it runs fine to fine leg. Josh Hazlewood should probably stop the boundary but flies with the big dive.

    Hales 28, Root 7

The commentators on Australian TV seem to think Mitchell Starc might be struggling with an injury, perhaps that heel problem that kept him out of a Test match. One to keep an eye on.

He continues but Root flicks him off his pads nicely. The batsmen think about an all-run four again but Root slips and they only manage three.

I really like the look of Alex Hales today. He crunches a cut which would have been four but for a great diving stop from Maxwell at backward point

    Big!

Hales fancies Maxwell here. Not much wrong with the delivery but the England number three steps down and smashes him over mid-off for six. That's the biggest we've seen so far. It lands 10 rows back.

  6. Eng 118-2published at 20 overs

Joe Root is the new man of course and he almost gets out nicking a very full wide delivery, an issue he has had before of course.

Gasps from the crowd but Root gets away with it and pushes through the covers to get off nought a few balls later.

Unlucky there. In the previous over he ran one down but kept his eye on it a little bit more. Right idea, just the wrong execution.

    Bairstow b Starc 44 (Eng 117-2)

Again Jonny Bairstow fails to go on. It's back of a length from Starc, bowled with a cross seam, and Bairstow just tries to run the ball down to third man but ends up playing the ball back onto leg stump.

There's no celebration from Starc but that's an important breakthrough.

Alex Hales is facing to Maxwell now having been starved of the strike in the last couple of overs by Bairstow.

The second day of the IPL auction is under way and he's just gone unsold in the first round of bidding. Has just someone just told the Nottinghamshire batsman? He clips a couple before thumping the ball over the cover fielders for four.

I'd like to see a competition between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith where they make them react as to whether they will review it.

  13. 6 runs

    Eng 111-1published at 18 overs

The short straight boundary has saved Jonny Bairstow here.

Mitchell Starc is back in the attack and bowls a bouncer. Bairstow upper-cuts and it flies high in the air but just over over the head of Adam Zampa for six at third man.

    Just 68m that maximum.

  14. Eng 105-1published at 17 overs

    Bairstow 38, Hales 12

Eight runs come from that first over from Maxwell. England are doing well to keep on finding the rope here. They've managed it in each of the last four overs.

Bairstow got a century over at the Waca in the Test series remember. He clearly likes it in this city.

Bairstow has a look to start with and then goes big.

He skips down at Maxwell and pummels him over the short, straight boundary for six.

His absence has been much-debated in this series but here's Glenn Maxwell for his first bowl in the match.

He's a handy off-spinner as well as an explosive spinner.

    Bairstow 31, Hales 11

    Shot!

That's a fine, fine stroke from Jonny Bairstow.

A perfect cover drive that goes just to the right of the man diving at extra cover and also beats mid off as he runs to his left. After a slow start Bairstow is picking up his scoring rate. That'll be drinks.

Excellent from Jonny Bairstow, using his brain, manipulating the field and England are going nicely. This is a lively surface and a quick outfield.

  19. Eng 92-1published at 15 overs

    Bairstow 27, Hales 10

Bairstow misses out on a full toss from Zampa as he had already premeditated a sweep but still collects two.

Now he goes again. Same shot but much better connection. This outfield really is quick. The fielder at square leg has no hope of preventing the boundary.

  20. Eng 82-1published at 14 overs

A stunning first boundary for Alex Hales.

Too full from Tye and it's just a punch from Hales with little foot movement right back past the umpire's toes.

Tye continues to mix it up. His final ball is another slower ball but Hales still manages to collect a single. This is a promising start from Hales. He looks good.
