  1. Eng 76-1published at 13 overs

    Bairstow 19, Hales 2

Still no spin for Zampa but a little bit of skid off the pitch. He hits Bairstow on the pads and appeals but that was going down leg by a long way.

Bairstow knocks a couple to end the over but the Aussies are pulling this back a little now.

The England run rate is back below six for the first time since the second over.

  2. Eng 73-1published at 12 overs

So England's platform has been set by that 49 from 46 balls by Jason Roy but they're going to need someone to go on.

Alex Hales is in at number three and gets off the mark early with a single.

Hales will be delighted there's no Pat Cummins in the Aussie line-up today. He has dismissed him four times from just 16 balls.

Jason Roy has played a beautiful little knock, very powerful dominant figure at the crease but on that occasion maybe deceived by a slower ball. Looking to go over the top, all he could was loft it up and an easy catch for Hazlewood at mid-on.

    Roy c Hazlewood b Tye 49 (Eng 71-1)

This time Jason Roy fails to convert his excellent start.

The England opener is totally deceived by a slower ball from Andrew Tye and skies the ball high into the Perth sky before Josh Hazlewood takes a good catch running back at mid on.

Tye is the man to take the first wicket at this new stadium. A quiz question for 50 years from now.

  5. Eng 71-0published at 11 overs

    Run rate 6.45

These two are so quick between the wickets. The square boundaries are big but Bairstow didn't hit the ball too far out of the 30-yard circle and still England collect two.

Not too much spin in Zampa's first over. Five runs off it.

It's been a lively surface and a lively start from England. They've been destructive, mostly from Jason Roy, who has timed the ball beautifully, especially when he hasn't tried to over-hit it.

The first powerplay goes to England then as Roy continues to make Mitchell Starc pay for that no ball.

As a couple more fielders are allowed out, Steve Smith introduces the spin Adam Zampa into the attack.

  8. Eng 66-0published at 10 overs

    Roy 47, Bairstow 13

Andrew Tye comes into the attack and Tim Paine is convinced he's got Roy caught behind with his first ball.

Paine throws the ball up in celebration after thinking he has heard an edge but Tye's appeal was almost non-existent. Again the Aussies consider reviewing but rightly choose against it.

Good footwork from Bairstow to finish the over as he stops the ball running back with his boot.

I prefer this stadium to the Gabba, it hasn't fallen for that trick of colouring the chairs weirdly.

Mitchell Marsh corrects his lengths and only concedes a single from the rest of his over. There's a little bit of nibble off the seam for the bowlers and Bairstow doesn't quite get a couple out of the middle.

The TV pictures are showing some brilliant aerial shots of this new ground which is surrounded on three sides by the river in Perth. Lovely.

  11. Eng 64-0published at 8.1 overs

    Roy 45, Bairstow 13

What was that about boundaries? A brilliant shot from Jason Roy as Marsh over-pitches and the batsman whacks the ball back down the ground for four.

I wasn't expecting this start from England. I had a look at the surface and it seemed to be lively out there. I didn't anticipate it being so free-flowing for England.

  14. Eng 60-0published at 8 overs

    Roy 41, Bairstow 13

That lbw appeal was indeed very close. The ball-tracking shows it would have clipped the top of leg stump but would have been umpire's call so Smith was right not to review.

Bairstow is really unfortunate here. He smashes a textbook drive straight back at the bowler and the ball cannons into the stumps, denying him a certain boundary.

He still manages to sprint two but that's two overs in a row without a boundary. Remarkable.

  15. Eng 56-0published at 7 overs

It's a tidy start from Mitchell Marsh with his right-arm fast medium bowling.

Roy gets a single and then there's a big lbw appeal as Bairstow walks across his stumps on the final ball of the over.

Could have been going down leg stump, could have been going over and Bairstow might have hit it but that still looked pretty close. Steve Smith is really interested in a review (when is he not?) but decides against it.

A really good start, there's no hangover from Adelaide. That 8-5 could have affected confidence but they have run between the wickets really well.

After just six overs Mitchell Marsh is into the attack with Mitch Starc given a rest.

That must be a boost for England.

The pitch has played pretty well so far, I know the groundsman is keen to get back to the good old days of the Waca of fast bouncy pitches. I know the Waca had a lot of character.

  19. Eng 54-0published at 6 overs

    Roy 38, Bairstow 10

With Jason Roy rocketing along, Jonny Bairstow is playing more of a Test match innings. He lets a couple from Josh Hazlewood go before getting right behind a defensive shot.

Now he's away. A poor ball from Hazlewood, not fully timed by the Yorkie but it just makes it out to this long square boundary.

Four more. This one is an inside edge but it flies across this new outfield for four to fine leg. England go past 50 in the sixth over.

Fantastic start from Jason Roy, he's not really taken any risks, he's just playing nice cricket shots, using the pace of Starc.
