And it's given out on review! It was a delivery tossed up which struck him clean on pad. It span just enough and pitched in line and Latham is trudging back to the pavilion after being given out first ball. A huge moment for England.

Moeen Ali appeals for lbw after Tom Latham is struck on the pad. It's turned down and England captain Eoin Morgan asks for a review.

At 97-3, England are clawing their way back into this. Chapman was looking to advance on a number of occasions, I don't like to see a batsman guessing when he should come down the pitch, he was looking to loft it over the top and all he could do is find the edge - an easy catch for Eoin Morgan at backward point.

Thanks Stephan. England continue with spin in the form of Moeen Ali and he gets the breakthrough! Mark Chapman comes down the pitch but gets his timing wrong and sends a catch into the hands of Eoin Morgan at backward point.

A dancing Chapman is almost deceived by a Rashid googly, but does enough to steer behind point for a couple. He's eager, Chapman, looking to advance towards Rashid at every opportunity. He probably kills it on the dancefloor at weddings. Loves the Grease medley. Here's Timothy Abraham.

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace, speaking to Sky Sports just after the drinks break: "Fortunately Ben Stokes has popped up at the right time to take a great catch for us before drinks. The pitch looks a lot flatter now, I think they must have swapped it during the interval!

"I think we have perhaps bowled a little bit too full and they bowled a bit more back of length. New Zealand have played well but two wickets and we are right back in it. I'm not sure if we were happy with our total, but all the batsmen came off saying it was very difficult to score.

"Of course you always want a few more runs. We were probably a little under par with the toal and wanted early wickets. But I still think we are in this if Adil Rashid can take a few wickets and get them 100-4. You'll see the confidence go up if we can get a few wickets."

Has offie Moeen been introduced to pressurise young Chapman? Slip in place when the leftie is on strike, only for the 23-year-old to dance and work for a single. The crowd is definitely much larger than it was at the beginning of the match. A Saturday evening walk-up.

Hmmmm. Not the best start from Moeen Ali. Awful full toss, swatted for six by Kane Williamson.

  9. NZ 80-2published at 18 overs

    Rashid 2-1-5-1

The players took drinks at the fall of the wicket. Mark Chapman, another left-hander, replaces Munro. Chapman has played international cricket for Hong Kong, you know. With no Ross Taylor, England will fancy their chances of chipping through the middle order. Williamson the key, you feel.

Kane Williamson and Colin Munro were just taking the game away from England so that's a vital wicket. Adil Rashid is so attacking and so often the case he gets the breakthrough with Ben Stokes flying through the air like a swan to take the catch! England really needed that.

If I told that someone has done something remarkable when England need it most, you would only need one guess at the name of that player, wouldn't you?

Ben Stokes has taken a terrific catch at short cover to dismiss Colin Munro, who falls one short of a half-century. Adil Rashid is the bowler, but this is all about the Stokes snaffle. It's a check-drive from Munro, aerial, head-high. Stokes dives high to his left, goalkeeper-style, and takes a worldie.

Colin Munro remains transformed from the man that couldn't lay bat on one at the beginning of this innings. A lovely straight drive, played with an iron-straight bat, brings three down the ground off Ben Stokes. Joe Root claps his hands, trying tog get something from this England team. Stokes, Morgan and Chris Woakes have a conflab. Where can the tourists conjure something from? One good ball, one good bit of cricket...

If Munro's kept quiet for an over or two, he will start to play more risky shots. If England contain him, they might earn a chance, whether it goes to hand or not.

Morgan does make the change, calling on spin for the first time. Adil Rashid, he of the white-ball only, with his leggies in a stadium now bathed in shadow. 95 on the back of the Yorkshire tweaker, milked for five singles. If it keeps going like this, New Zealand will stroll it.

Through all of this, Kane Williamson is an understated, reassuring presence. Becalmed behind an old armguard, he punches Stokes through the covers as one of four runs from the over. At the end of the over, Eoin Morgan walks with purpose, like a skipper about to make a change.

It is quite nice to have a different type of ODI game here. The 50-over format can produce those subtleties that the 20-over version simply doesn't.

  17. NZ 64-1published at 14 overs

Tom Curran continues to bowl slightly floaty half-volleys, only saved by mid-off when Colin Munro belts another cover drive. Time for some spin? England need a wicket sharpish. Yes, there has been plenty in this pitch, but it would take some turnaround to win this if the Black Caps reach 100-1.

It's a game of two ends at the moment. At one end, Wood and Curran have been awry. At the other, Stokes has continued where Woakes left off. Still, it's noticeable that England have not got the ball to misbehave off the pitch in the same way that the Kiwis did. The cruise liner that was peering over the top of the stand is departing. Either that or the ground is moving.

They are both half chances, or maybe I am doing Mark Wood a disservice, probably quarter chances. It was like an action replay watching Wood diving to get there. Colin Munro likes it in that area.
