  1. dropped catch

    NZ 58-1

Almost! Colin Munro picks Tom Curran off his pads, very nearly picking out a diving Mark Wood on the leg-side fence. It's not great from Curran, mind, who seems to think that leg-stump half-volleys are the way to get Munro. The next ball is picked up for six. Wood, being given the runaround in the shadows, is getting a lot of grief from the spectators gathered behind him.

Listening in bed as TMS keeps me company yet again through the night. Enjoying Swanny's accents and anecdotes in particular. Almost exactly 10 years ago, me and the missus were watching a Test match at Wellington. Jacob Oram took a few, Tim Ambrose made a ton to rescue England. Now three house moves, marriage and two kids later life is a bit different...

And so, as they do so often when they need something, England turn to Ben Stokes. With the fielding restrictions relaxed, there are no slips, but a ring remains inside the 30-yard circle. When Munro inside-edges, Stokes had his head in his hands.

Williamson the key. If England get him out cheaply they are not out of the match.

Tom Curran into the attack, replacing Mark Wood and serving up an awful toss that Munro biffs through the covers for four. Body language not great from England here. Hands on hips, hair being ruffled. They can't take much more of this when defending such a modest total.

I think Colin Munro has used up all of a season's luck in one innings! He's using all the edges, but he found the middle a few times as well. He's not just a one-trick pony, and New Zealand will want him still there beyond 10 overs.

At some point, without me spotting it, Colin Munro has transformed from frantic swiper to cultured coaching-manual disciple. A drive through mid-off off Woakes is good looking enough to hang in a gallery. The Kiwis are flying here. England might be begging for the end of the powerplay in order to get some spin on.

I don't think you can call that a dropped catch because it went like a rocket!

Is that a chance? Kane Williamson is concerned when he cuts Wood at catchable height towards gully. Jonny Bairstow doesn't get a hand on it, which is perhaps a good thing, because it may have amputated a few fingers on its way to the boundary. The second one is more controlled, a classic Williamson cut all along the carpet. Wood's radar is malfunctioning.

I like having Mark Wood in the team but I would have found a place from David Willey in this XI. Ideally you want Wood on first change. Maybe Tom Curran might have missed out or England could have lost a batsmen given they have so many all-rounders in this team.

Accurate from Woakes. The extra pace of Mark Wood may bring the thunder, but a few extra clicks on the speedo might not be the order of the day on this deck. Areas. Even Colin Munro is becalmed, pushing back a maiden. It's as if the game has taken a time-out.

It's dangerous to give Colin Murno width, even though England have dismissed him twice with balls wide of the wicket. He is just using that extra pace from Mark Wood and Chris Woakes at the moment.

It might be skittish, but the Munro Madness is must-see entertainment. Previously out of his crease, he's deeper as he waits for Mark Wood and lofts a wide half-volley over the covers for four. The longer he hangs around, the more settled he gets, the more of a problem it is for England.

The Colin Munro Circus continues. The burly left-hander crouches in his stance, hands almost touching the ground. An inside edge of Woakes misses the stumps by a coat of varnish, the there's dance, a swing and a miss. He'll probably get a match-winning ton.

I think Colin Munro thought he was out when struck on the pad by Mark Wood because he started running, but it pitched outside leg stump. Then he could easily have been run out when Joe Root scampered round from the slips and had a shy at the stumps.

More of this chat, please. Meeting cricketers, especially at the bar. Meanwhile, Colin Munro does his best to be dismissed three times in the space of two deliveries. An lbw shout against Mark Wood, turned down. As the appeal goes in, Munro wanders down the track and would have been run out had Joe Root's throw from second slip hit the stumps. Next ball, a hook at a Wood bouncer drops over keeper Jos Buttler. Chaos.

At the game and just bumped into James Taylor when buying a drink at the interval! Such a lovely bloke, was a pleasure to talk to.

Regards the game, England 20 runs short despite the dodgy pitch, so NZ should win comfortably.

It was an odd dismissal all round. The delivery did little, except maybe stick in the pitch. Guptill played about four different strokes and the tumbling Curran made a meal of a pretty straightforward catch. Kane Williamson is the new man. When he faces up to Chris Woakes, it could be that the batsman and bowler are the two nicest men in world cricket.

That's the early wicket England needed and again Chris Woakes is the man to do it again. The pitch played its part again I tihnk and Martin Guptill has just hit it straight to Tom Curran at mid-on.
