Buttler has made seven Test fifties, with no hundreds and a top score of 85, averaging 32.03.

He has a capable batsman in Sam Curran for company, although who knows how long Stuart Broad and James Anderson could hang around with him after that.

Can Buttler get a big score and completely bat Pakistan out of this game?

Ex-England batter on BBC Test Match Special

It's not been an electric performance from England but everyone has chipped in to get them into a good position. I'm excited to see what Jos Buttler does today. He batted well last night and now has the leverage to do what he was brought into the team to do.

BBC Weather's Matt Taylor: "The clouds above Headingley will break up at times today and shouldn't be too threatening. It could thicken up during the mid-afternoon and bring with it a risk of showers but we should have a decent amount of play - if not a warm day."

Pakistan's Mohammad Amir, speaking to Sky Sports: "The first innings matters a lot - if we could have held the catch of Buttler yesterday it would have been different and there's plenty of hard work ahead."

Sam Curran is not the only notable birthday at Headingley today.

Happy 52nd birthday to Pakistan legend Wasim Akram.

How England would like that shared birthday to be an omen for the development of their left-arm swing bowler.

  9. Welcomepublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 3 June 2018

Hello and welcome to live coverage of day three of the second Test at Headingley.

England will resume on 302-7, leading by 128 runs.

Jos Buttler is unbeaten on 34, having played well last night after being dropped on four by Hasan Ali.

Debutant Sam Curran, who turns 20 today, is also at the crease, having looked very assured so far in reaching 16 not out.

Pakistan bowled fairly well after a disappointing start yesterday but need three very quick wickets and to bat much better in their second innings to stand a chance of winning this series.

The last time England won a Test match, against West Indies at Lord's.

A chastening winter in Australia and New Zealand and a dismal defeat by Pakistan last week have followed.

But Joe Root's side are on top here at Headingley after the first two days. Another strong performance on day three and England should finally secure a Test victory again.
