What advantage will another 20-30 runs bring to the party? You’re just restricting the time left for you to win the game?

Crikey that's a good delivery from Mohammed Shami. It's quick, it swings and it seams off the pitch. This new ball is certainly talking. Three times in a row Woakes is searching for the ball like me looking for my phone in the dark. He misses every time. The England balcony is unmoved.

How do I listen to the game in Tenerife? My wife keeps saying I've been spending all my days by the pool on my phone following the text commentary!

You don’t want to be totally led by the weather, but on a day like today and Monday with what’s been knocking around, it must come into your thinking?

Well you're certainly outnumbered Paul but it's good to get the opposing opinion. Two gents are sipping a drink in the stands with shorts and floppy sun hats on. I think they're optimistic. There's no sign of any aggressive start from England yet. A maiden to start from Ishant.

Paul Cotterill: Unpopular opinion: England quite right to slog another 50-70 or so if they can. 300 lead lets them set ultra-attacking fields for longer, increasing balls per wicket ratio in a way which outweighs downside of overall bowling time lost

Unsurprisingly in these conditions it's two seamers to start for India. Ishant Sharma is going to bowl from the Pavilion End.

Virat Kohli isn't on the field. He's struggling with a back strain, by all accounts. Ajinkya Rahane is captaining India in his place.

Maybe this is all a big bluff from England. Maybe they'll just declare in an over and they've just done this to get us all worked up. These are perfect Jimmy Anderson bowling conditions. Shami beats Woakes' bat to end the over.

You’ve got to be positive, no point in blocking it, nudging ones and twos - you’ve got to take the game to India

Four byes! Shami bowls his first ball to first slip, it bounces horribly in front of the Indian fielders, and they fail to stop the ball.

There was plenty of swing there. Just saying.

A group of people just came towards me downstairs, holding bats which I thought were for me to sign. I was highly confused, and a tiny bit flattered, before I realised that Kumar Sangakkara was stood right next to me...

Mohammed Shami charges in to start the days play and Aleem Dar sticks his hand straight up in the air.

Everyone stops, a little confused. We'll try again.

Matt Hayler: The decision for England to keep batting is a completely baffling one. Why? For another 50 runs! Get the Indians in with rain likely this afternoon and tomorrow!

Sam Goose: England you cannot lose this game! You cannot win it without taking 10 more wickets. You cannot take 10 wickets while you’re batting. DECLARE NOW.

Francis Edwards: This decision alone tells me that the Windies Test match still haunts him. You have to be bold sometimes, especially in England with the weather. What is he afraid of, India making 400 in gloomy conditions with heavy rain on the way? Come on Joe!!!

Here's your answer Jonny. You should be trying to win this match. The weather forecast is extremely iffy which reduces your bowling time. You're 250 runs ahead. Perfect bowling conditions currently prevailing for the seamers. What part of that don't you understand. Duh!

Here are those Jonny Bairstow quotes in full.

He has told BBC Radio 5 live's Eleanor Oldroyd he doesn't see why England should declare just yet:

"There’s still two days left, I think we will bat this morning and I don’t see any reason why we should not bat this morning. Why should we declare? We need to bat as long as possible.

"The pitch should only potentially turn more, do a little bit more of the seam, but it’s important we put things in perspective. The weather can move around the grandstand here, and it does dry here very quickly."
