You can't escape the fact that at the moment if Root and Bairstow don't get runs then England are in the mire.

Let's just remember, we started the day with India on 307-6, England polished them off and conceded only 22 runs, then reached lunch on 46-0. They have now been dismissed within a session to concede a first innings lead of 168.

Buttler c sub b Bumrah 39 (Eng 161 all out)

It's all over now though. Buttler backs away and launches it towards long on but does not time it and the fielder rushes in from the boundary to take the catch.

For a day and a half, Trent Bridge has been respectful, rather than boisterous. Not like the energy we saw at Edgbaston, especially when you consider this match started on a Saturday. I was told by some fans that sat in the Smith Cooper Stand that stewards were clamping down on songs and chants. Surely not?

    Buttler 37, Anderson 1

A perfectly calm forward defensive shot and the crowd erupts.

This 10th-wicket stand is England's second-highest of the innings.

A second six for Buttler, launching Ishant over long-off in expansive fashion and once again Jimmy will have just the one to face. Can he hold on again?

The final ball of the over is like that soul-destroying one that got him from the penultimate ball of the match against Sri Lanka in 2014. It is short and fended away.

Pandya is taken off after a devastating spell of six overs, one maiden, 5-28. It is the quirky Bumrah who returns, looking to add to his one wicket. Again Buttler takes a single from the fifth delivery.

There are a four slips and a short leg and it is a beauty that swings and beats the edge, but there is no touch and Jimmy survives.

Buttler has raced to 29 but he has given Jimmy one ball to face from Ishant.

This is pure theatre. Complete silence as the bowler runs in, then cheers no matter what happens - an Anderson block, a pinched single or, garnering the most noise, a Buttler biff.

  19. Eng 148-9published at 35 overs

Excellent work from Buttler, he strikes a two and then plays a dead bat to the final ball and they race through for a single to allow him to retain the strike. We can go on for an extra half an hour in this session. It was extended by half an hour as it was. Tea could be as late as 16:40 BST if these two hang in there.

Jimmy made 81 against India on this ground four years ago so you never know and he scampers through for a single to give Buttler the strike with three balls remaining in the over.
