Northants have a 60-run lead going into day two of their championship match in Chester-le-Street, but Durham will feel they have got themselves back into the match after another poor home performance with the bat.

They were out for just 129 earlier on a seaming pitch as Luke Procter took 5-33, his best figures for Northants. Four of the Durham top five failed to get to double figures - with Stuart Poynter their top-scorer on 28.

However a wicket in the final over of the day saw Saif Zaib depart for 11 and the scoreboard take a slightly better look from the home side's point of view with Northants on 189-6.

Adam Rossington will resume on 47 while captain Alex Wakely earlier made 60.

Durham were bowled out for 91 against Kent in their opening game here this season and lost heavily, while in their match at home to Derbyshire they were out for just 96 but went on to win.

However this is the seventh game in nine where they have conceded a first innings lead and if you keep doing that your chances of victory are diminished.

After a century stand between Azhar Ali and James Hildreth in the afternoon session, another one ensued, this time between Lewis Gregory and Steven Davies in the evening session.

The second however, came at a rather different pace as Lewis Gregory appeared to still be in Twenty20 mode, bludgeoning 65 off just 46 balls.

Jack Brooks picked up four wickets but they came at a cost as he racked up a century of his own against his new club, with ball in hand.

Somerset have two wickets still in hand going into day two, and with 374 runs on the board are in a dominant position.

And that's it for now.

Sussex would've been delighted to dismiss the hosts for 169 but an innings lead is looking a distant prospect now on a day in which 16 wickets have fallen.

It's just about even here but Middlesex will definitely be the happier of the two sides tonight.

Joe Denly struck a century and Zak Crawley narrowly missed out on a maiden first-class hundred on a dominant first day for promotion contenders Kent against Derbyshire.

Denly brought up his hundred before tea, but both he and Heino Kuhn (51) fell in the final session.

Derbyshire fought back with four wickets after tea, but Kent's scoring rate of almost four runs per over put them well on course to register maximum batting points.

It's been quite a turnaround for the hosts - who have fought back well to reduce promotion rivals Sussex from 87-2 to 108-6 in 5.2 overs.

Two wickets apiece for James Fuller and James Harris in that chaotic passage of play.

They came back from an even worse position at Northampton last week where they won after following on and look to be peaking at just the right time.

Sussex will no doubt be grateful for a bit of breathing space for now. Ben Brown has 15 not out and Chris Jordan is on 8.

Yes, that's it for day one at The Oval, where Division One leaders Surrey close on 256-6.

They were 36-3 after losing Rory Burns, Dean Elgar and Ryan Patel early on, but Ben Foakes and Ryan Jacks (both 48) led the recovery along with the day's star man.

Opener Mark Stoneman ends the day on 99 not out, so faces an anxious wait to complete his first century since November.

Notts bowled well as an attack - without captain Steven Mullaney - so this one is finely poised.

Drama at The Oval!

Surrey's Mark Stoneman is 99 not out and they've been taken off for bad light.

Will that be in it for the day? There are still eight overs to be bowled, so we will see. Tom Curran is alongside Stoneman on 12, with Surrey 256-6.

A low-scoring game here but Northants have had the better of it on day one with Luke Procter's 5-33 and a 60 from captain Alex Wakely.

Adam Rossington is faring well on 47 not out and but Saif Zaib fell at the last, caught behind off Matthew Salisbury for 11.

A good day for the Bears but they haven't quite had it all their way after losing both openers inside the first hour plus the crucial scalp of Jonathan Trott shortly before stumps.

Ian Bell is still there and he'll resume on 43 not out with Chris Wright on four.

Good contribution from Craig Meschede for the hosts - with a battling 53 plus the wicket of Dom Sibley.

It was a bit longer than a brief delay, but they're finally back under way at The Oval.

There seemed to be an issue over finding the correct helmet for Tom Curran - very important for safety reasons, but took a while longer than it possibly should've.

White Rose captain David Willey will hope the Jack Brooks injury is a minor one and he cannot afford any lapses in the field from here.

That's it for day one in the relegation battle at Southport, with Worcestershire on top.

They chose to bat this morning, with captain Brett D'Oliveira making 65 and Tom Bailey taking 4-41 as the visitors were all out for 222.

In reply, Haseeb Hameed went for a golden duck as Lancashire were 4-2 and 27-3 - and though Alex Davies and Dane Vilas added 54 - two late wickets see the hosts close on 96-5.

They trail by 126 runs going into day two.

Good day for the visitors and especially for Mohammed Abbas, who took a five-fer, but that early wicket for Gloucestershire will give the hosts a bit of hope.

Paul Horton (6 not out) and nightwatchman Gavin Griffiths (1) will come back tomorrow to make some inroads into the 191-run lead.

Cruel end to the day’s highest partnership as Worcestershire get an almighty stroke of luck to end the 54-run stand between Alex Davies and Dane Vilas.

First, Davies crashes a full blooded drive straight back at the bowler Josh Tongue, it hits his boot and cannons into the stumps at the bowler’s end to run out Vilas.

Then, having a four in between, just two balls later Davies is adjudged LBW and also trudges off equally disconsolately, looking closely at his bat. Does he think he hit it?

Disappointed gasps to both dismissals from the 1,800 crowd greet the 14th and 15th wickets of the day.

Surrey batsman Tom Curran takes a blow to the head from a Matt Milnes bouncer, and has a concussion test.

All appears to be well but there's a delay while a new helmet is found to fit him.

Meanwhile, Mark Stoneman waits nervously on 97 not out.

Ooh! Jamie Overton plays and misses Harry Brook outside off stump.

The bowler beats him again as Jamie drives and misses again. Did that cut back off the seam?
