  6. 'Any of six could go down' - Sharppublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire (11:00 BST)

Worcestershire head coach Kevin Sharp is confident that his team are good enough to avoid the two relegation places that six sides are scrapping over in Division One.

But, ahead of the meeting with main rivals Lancashire at Southport & Birkdale, he says it is all down to how the Pears perform themselves on the back of their innings-and-186 run win over Yorkshire – and not about what other teams do.

“You look at that table now and any of six could be relegated,” Sharp told BBC Hereford & Worcester. “With five games to go, and with the group of lads we’ve got now, we can do well this next few weeks.

“As the Championship season has gone on, we’ve got stronger. We beat Lancashire, had a well-earned draw with Nottinghamshire and, although Somerset were that bit better than us, we weren’t outplayed.

“To then go up to Scarborough and blow Yorkshire away like we did, put us in a really good place for this last five weeks. We were watching the Surrey-Lancashire game on the TV on the way down from Scarborough. No-one was unhappy about that result. But, at the end of the day you don’t want to rely on other results.”

  7. Rain delays play at Chelmsfordpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Essex v Hampshire

The forecast looks decidedly cricket-unfriendly at Essex HQ now - but it should improve by lunchtime. Just two points separate Essex (95) and Hampshire (93), who are fourth and fifth in the table respectively and will be keen to rack up some bonus points to open up the gap over foot of the table Lancashire, on 77.

  8. Lancs turn to Maharajpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire (11:00 BST)

Division One bottom club Lancashire have turned to South African international spinner Keshav Maharaj in the hope of boosting their County Championship survival hopes ahead of today’s visit of Worcestershire.

Of the six sides going into the final five weeks of Championship cricket, the Red Rose are in the worst plight.

Already 11 points adrift of safety, they have played a game more than all the four sides immediately above them – and the meeting with Worcestershire at Southport & Birkdale is the final home game before finishing the season with three successive away games – against title-chasing Somerset at Taunton, the Roses Match at Headingley and the season-closing trip to Southampton to play Hampshire.

“He’s a world class spinner,” said head coach Glen Chapple. “He has experience of bowling in English conditions. He’ll strengthen our bowling attack for the final four Championship games.

“Having previously played in England with South Africa, it’s been an ambition of mine to return and play county cricket,” said Maharaj. “Hopefully I can make a significant contribution.”

  9. Delayed start at The Ovalpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Surrey v Nottinghamshire

It's also been a damp start at The Oval, where Division One leaders Surrey host Nottinghamshire.

The earliest we'll see an inspection there is 11:30 BST - let's hope it doesn't start much later than that.

  10. Rain holds up Yorkshire v Somerset at Headingleypublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset

It looks a bit grim at Headingley at the moment, with rain likely to hold us up for at least an hour.

Yorkshire will be keen to bounce back after a big loss to Worcestershire at Scarborough and for their overseas star Kane Williamson to leave the White Rose county on a high.

Jack Brooks joins Somerset next summer and this may well be his final outing for the home side too.
