  1. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

Here's an update for you on the second division matches...

Kent have recovered well after the early loss of Sean Dickson at Derby. The visitors are now 84-1 against Derbyshire - with Zak Crawley on 55 not out.

Run-scoring remains a tough business at Bristol, where Gloucestershire are 31-0 after 16 overs against Leicestershire.

Glamorgan are reeling on 38-2 against Warwickshire at Colwyn Bay after a delayed start due to rain.

Nick Selman and Jack Murphy both fell early, caught behind off Keith Barker and Ryan Sidebottom respectively.

Northants have got off to a good start at the Riverside, where Durham are in trouble on 39-3.

Cameron Steel and Gareth Harte both fell early to Ben Sanderson and Graham Clark was lbw to Brett Hutton for 3.

After a late start because of rain at Lord's, Middlesex have reached 22-0 against promotion rivals Sussex.

WICKET Fell lbw b Bailey 31published at 12:03 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 55-2

    Tom Bailey has his man.

He had a big lbw appeal turned down earlier in the over but a couple balls later the umpire raises his finger to see Tom Fell on his way for 31.

It looks a bit more even now after what seemed a decent start for Worcestershire.

  4. Somerset rally after early lossespublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 49-2

Fisher drops short and Ali is up on his toes driving through long off for four.

The bowler gets his revenge with one that bounces and zips away off the seam.

Josh Shaw comes into the attack and Hildreth smashes him through the covers off the back foot for 4.

He gets a bit of luck with a top edge off the next ball, which flies over the slips for four more. He's got 26 runs now - 20 in boundaries.

Hildreth sees out the over. 49-2 after being 9-2 at one stage.

  5. Fell finding form at Southportpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 47-1

Tom Fell is finding his stride for Worcs, with five fours so far in his 25 not out.

Joe Clarke has also settled well, but Lancashire have brought Graham Onions back into their attack after a short breather.

  6. Toss and team newspublished at 11:54 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Surrey v Nottinghamshire

It's an uncontested toss at The Oval, with stand-in Notts captain Samit Patel opting to have a bowl.

Leaders Surrey have made four changes, with South African opener Dean Elgar back.

The hosts are without Sam Curran, who's on England duty and won't return until Thursday at the earliest, while Jason Roy remains out with a facial injury.

Notts also make four changes, with skipper Steve Mullaney injured and Matt Carter ill. Ben Slater makes his debut for the visitors.

  7. Ali fights back at Headingleypublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 37-2

David Willey's five overs have only cost 10 runs and he has the big wicket of Trescothick under his belt.

Three slips and a gully for the bowler-captain now, who strays down leg and Azhar Ali gets an easy four down to fine leg.

Shot! Willey over-compensates and is driven through point by Ali for four. He picks up a single off the 5th ball and Hildreth defends.

Matthew Fisher takes over the bowling from Jack Brooks...

  8. No play before lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Essex v Hampshire

    ChelmsfordImage source, Rex Features

It's a bit gloomy here at the moment but the forecast gets better this afternoon.

The latest is that lunch will be taken as planned at 1pm and then we'll have a pitch inspection.

Hampshire will start without James Vince, who is with the England squad and Dale Steyn is out with a groin injury.

Both teams are in the middle of the table, less than 20 points off the relegation spot.

Some early team news from The Oval, where Samit Patel will captain Notts in the absence of Steve Mullaney - who misses out with a back spasm.

They're at Division One leaders Surrey. We'll bring you news from the toss when we have it, as they hope to start play relatively soon.

  10. Onions typically frugalpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 23-1

He might not have got the wicket - with a dropped catch not helping - but Graham Onions has been typically shrewd with the ball for Lancashire.

The former England man has conceded just six runs from his five overs, with Worcestershire's Tom Fell and Joe Clarke not finding runs easy to come by.

  11. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

We have five matches in the second division. Here's the latest:

Kent got off to a bad start against Derbyshire, where the hosts have removed Sean Dickson, lbw to Hardus Viljoen for 4. The visitors have recovered slightly to 48-1.

No early alarm bells for Gloucestershire, but runs are hard to come by. They're 12-0 against promotion hopefuls Leicestershire at Bristol.

Durham are wobbling on 13-2 against Northants, who are without Ben Duckett after he picked up a finger injury in the last game (against Middlesex). Cameron Steel was the first man out, caught by Alex Wakely off Ben Sanderson, who also pinned Gareth Harte lbw for 6.

After a late start due to rain at Colwyn Bay, Glamorgan are 10-1 against Warwickshire. Nick Selman is the man out, caught behind off Keith Barker for a duck.

Rain also held up the game at Lord's - where Middlesex entertain Sussex. We're under way now though and the home side have 4-0.

Both teams are still very much in the hunt for promotion and will be keen as mustard to get started.

  12. wicket

WICKET Mitchell c Vilas b Lester 9published at 11:32 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 20-1

Toby Lester celebratesImage source, Rex Features

A good toss to lose at Southport?

Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell edges Toby Lester behind, and Dane Vilas takes the catch for Lancashire.

He goes for nine, Worcs 20-1, with Joe Clarke in at number three.

  13. wicket

WICKET Trescothick c Lyth b Willey 4published at 11:28 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 5-2

    Disaster for Somerset!

David Willey gets a ball to move away extravagantly off a full length and the veteran opener Marcus Trescothick edges to slip.

The bowlers are well on top. Can James Hildreth stop the rot?

  14. Brooks on the charge at Headingleypublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 5-1

Azhar Ali is living dangerously here, going at balls from Jack Brooks with hard hands outside the off.

Brooks is really getting the ball to zip about here and he beats the batsman with a leg cutter that bounces and leaves Ali.

    Maiden over.

  15. Priorities change for Kentpublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Radio Kent at Derby

Derbyshire host County Championship cricket for the first time in over two months this morning, and as the T20 dugouts are put away, the advertising hoardings for the longer for of the game are dragged out once more.

Kent may get a sense of deja vu as the groundsman do their work, as their attention turns fully to division two promotion following their T20 Blast quarter final defeat to Lancashire.

Just when they need a boost, a Kiwi hero emerges from the Derby undergrowth. Fast bowler Matt Henry returns for the final five game starts of the season after taking 49 wickets in six four-day games earlier this season.

But here’s the kicker; Kent bizarrely have the lowest number of batting bonus points in the entire division (6), having only passed 200 just three times since in their first innings’. Yet they sit in third, primed for a late season push.

If they want to catch Sussex and Warwickshire, 11 and 15 points above then respectively, they need runs on the board, and soon.

  16. Somerset on the back foot at Headingleypublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 5-1

Marcus Trescothick is getting a bit of a peppering from David Willey, who gets one to bounce well over the batsman's head.

    Maiden over.

  17. Late start at Chelmsfordpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Essex v Hampshire

Don't worry - the forecast WILL get better.

  18. Maharaj waiting to bowl for Lancspublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 9-0

Graham Onions and Toby Lester open the bowling for Lancashire, with Worcs 7-0 after four overs.

Remember the hosts have South African spinner Keshav Maharaj on debut, so it'll be interesting to see how early he's used.

Lancs slipped to the bottom of the table with a tense defeat against Surrey at the Kia Oval last week...

  19. wicket

WICKET Byrom c Hodd b Brooks 1published at 11:17 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 5-1

Not much he could've done about that. Eddie Byrom gets a nasty bumper just short of a length from Jack Brooks and the batsman can only fence it to the keeper.

Azhar Ali is the Somerset number three.

  20. Bottom v top at Colwyn Baypublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Glamorgan v Warwickshire (11:15 BST)

Warwickshire captain Jeetan Patel has warned his Bears players not to underestimate Glamorgan when the Division Two leaders meet the bottom club at Colwyn Bay over the next four days.

Fresh from their easy two-day win over Gloucestershire, the Bears are four points ahead of second-placed Sussex and 15 clear of third-placed Kent, both of whom they play in their final two matches.

Their next three games – Glamorgan, the home game with Durham and then the trip to face Leicestershire – give them a chance of putting some daylight between themselves and their nearest pursuers.

But Patel says: “We have to make sure our attitude is spot on and probably give even that little bit more because Glamorgan will know the surroundings and the pitch better than we do.

"The expectations are there, from the spectators and also from us as players. We don't believe we should be in the Second Division and that's good because we are striving for more. But you can only play the game's that's in front of you and, if you start looking too far ahead, you can come a cropper."

Warwickshire won on their only previous visit to Colwyn Bay, in 2005, when they triumphed by 10 wickets thanks to centuries from Ian Westwood and Jonathan Trott in a match-winning score of 545-7.
