Joe Clarke was just beginning to up the pace, finding the boundary with regularity - but then...

  3. Somerset taking chargepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Surrey 18-1 v Nottinghamshire

A big scalp for Notts as Rory Burns feathers one through for wicketkeeper Tom Moores to take.

It's Luke Fletcher with the wicket - there isn't much contact but there doesn't need to be.

It leaves Burns 39 runs short of 1,000 in the Championship this season, and Surrey are in a game!

  5. No play before lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Essex v Hampshire

Yes, rain has wiped out the morning session. But it's not all bad news as an altogether more welcome liquid is available at the ground...

    Surrey 18-0 v Nottinghamshire

Simon Dolley: I do wonder how an England team with Rory Burns and James Hildreth batting would have played in the last test match? Shame that we only seem to pick players for the future rather than for today...

Jimmy Dawson: How Rory Burns hasn’t had an England call up by now is beyond me.

I'm sure the England selectors are watching, but can they leave Rory Burns out much longer?

  9. Yorkshire kept in check by Ali and Hildrethpublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 85-2

Jack Brooks is still getting bounce and movement here but Azhar Ali defends, digging out a very full ball to end the over.

Worcestershire have this morning become the first visiting team to avail themselves of the newly refurbished away dressing room facilities at Southport & Ainsdale Sports Club.

And it may not be too happy a place right now after two quick wickets, Tom Fell’s LBW to Tom Bailey having been immediately followed by the run-out of Alex Milton by a direct hit from Keshav Majaraj.

Lancashire’s new signing has just come on to bowl too. Bit early for a spinner on a first day! Are they expecting it to turn?

  11. Close call at Headingleypublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 85-2

David Willey hits Hildreth on the pad and there's a shout for lbw... Not out. Too high?

The next ball is nudged behind square leg for four.

  12. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

Here's the latest drama in the second division matches...

Kent continue to recover well after the early loss of Sean Dickson at Derby. The visitors are now 101-1 against Derbyshire - with Zak Crawley on 57 not out.

Run-scoring remains a tough business at Bristol, where Gloucestershire are 50-1 after 22 overs against promotion hopefuls Leicestershire. Chris Dent is the man out, bowled by Gavin Griffiths for 28.

Glamorgan are reeling on 50-3 against Warwickshire at Colwyn Bay after a delayed start due to rain.

Nick Selman and Jack Murphy both fell early, caught behind off Keith Barker and Ryan Sidebottom respectively. Connor Brown was the last to go, caught behind off Ollie Stone for 4.

Northants have got off to a great start at the Riverside, where Durham have slipped to 68-5.

Cameron Steel and Gareth Harte both fell early to Ben Sanderson and Graham Clark was lbw to Brett Hutton for 3. Alex Lees was lbw to Luke Procter for 25 and the bowler also dispatched Axar Patel, bowled for eight.

After a late start because of rain at Lord's, Middlesex have declined to 41-2 against promotion rivals Sussex - after being 27 without loss. Sam Robson fell lbw to Ollie Robinson for 8, while Stevie Eskinazi also departed lbw off the bowling of Jofra Archer for a duck.

  13. Lancs bring Maharaj into attackpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Lancashire v Worcestershire 76-3

Worcestershire bring captain Brett D'Oliveira to the crease, hoping to bring some composure to their innings.

Joe Clarke looks pretty set on 23, but Lancashire have brought South African spinner Keshav Maharaj into their attack for the very first time.

    Intriguing times at Southport.

  14. Ali and Hildreth rebuild at Headingleypublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 75-2

Azhar Ali shoulders arms extravagantly to see off a seaming delivery from Josh Shaw.

Matt Fisher to continue. Hildreth pushes the bowler into the off side for a single and Ali steers the next ball to point for two more.

Well bowled! Fisher gets close to taking the edge of Ali's bat. Did he play inside the line?

Not out, anyway. David Willey back in the attack now.

    Surrey 12-0 v Nottinghamshire

Surrey batsman Rory Burns reaches 1,000 first class runs for the season at The Oval.

Shot! Azhar Ali clatters Matt Fisher for another four through the covers. He gets a leading edge off the next delivery but the ball dribbles safely out into the off side.

Ali pinches a single and Hildreth steers Fisher through point for four more.

Whisper it quietly, Somerset fans, but these two are getting the visitors back into this game.

They've put on 65 in 11.5 overs together.

  20. Somerset fighting back at Headingleypublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 29 August 2018

    Yorkshire v Somerset 57-2

Matt Fisher gets the ball to move away outside the off stump and Hildreth leaves it alone.

This has been a decent fightback after the early loss of Byrom and Trescothick but there's plenty of assistance on this surface and still a long way to go.
