Sri Lanka had made a decent start this morning.

They added 36 runs in the first hour through openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva.

But it was Jack Leach who struck first.

Silva tried to sweep but missed a pretty straight ball and was hit on the pad.

It looked pretty plumb but of course Sri Lanka reviewed. The decision stood.

Don’t understand this clamour for Bairstow. Shouldn’t we just pick the 11 who are best suited to beating the opposition in each test match we play rather than accommodate individuals?

That wicket from Ben Stokes on the stroke of lunch will give England a lovely little boost.

It was pretty poor from Dhananjaya de Silva.

A ball before the wicket he played an awful shot on a full and wide delivery, even if he was saved on review for the caught behind.

He then showed minimal foot movement and edged Stokes to Joe Root at first slip.

England fans here are very pleased with their team's efforts - especially that third breakthrough just before the interval.

But the most lively area at the ground is the school stand containing hundreds of cricket-loving local youngsters.

Every run is greeted with loud cheers and drumming.

Speaking to them, despite the wickets that have fallen, they remain confident that the history being made in this match will be a record run-chase rather than a first ever win for England at this ground.

    Thanks Tom.

Having worked on England's last four away series, where they have now gone 13 games without a win, this seems a little strange.

    England are closing in.

England are on their way to an away win it seems, and Matt Henry could be the man to talk you through it all.

England are well on their way to victory.

They did not take a wicket in the first hour but since then they've dismissed three Sri Lankan batsmen before lunch .

The openers were first to go with Jack Leach dismissing the sweeping Kushal Silva and then Moeen Ali getting Dimuth Karunaratne caught and bowled.

And just before the interval Ben Stokes ensured the lunch will taste that little bit better.

He had Dhananjaya de Silva caught at slip for 21 on the final ball before the break.

It came just a ball after thought Stokes he had dismissed Dhananjaya, only for the caught behind to be overturned on review.

England need seven wickets for victory.

Dhananjaya de Silva's reprieve lasted exactly one ball! There's something in the air in Galle, we've seen some truly brainless shots in the morning sessions and there's another one. Another two, really.

De Silva got away with an ugly swing to the previous ball but he doesn't take his second life, edging Ben Stokes straight to Joe Root.

That shall be lunch. It was well worth England squeezing an extra over in.

Well then! Umpire Marais Erasmus had no hesitation in giving Dhananjaya de Silva out to a horrid waft to a half-volley outside off stump but the technology says no.

Joe Root does almost engineer a chance as Kusal Mendis mistimes a shot off his part-time spin.

He's got 19 Test wickets to his name, Root. Not too shabby. And he's quick enough to ensure that we can get one more over in before lunch.

Now Joe Root is going to have a bowl himself, final over before the interval. Partnership breaker?

  18. SL 97-2published at 36 overs

It's a tough gig for Ben Stokes bowling on this track. Not his game.

He puts a shift in though, trying to go wide on the crease and angle it in to Kusal Mendis, but Sri Lanka negotiate his over comfortably enough. Just the one from it.

Ben Stokes, man of the match during England's last away Test win, is getting a bowl before lunch.

Adil Rashid is a touch expensive but he's one of my favourite bowlers to watch. I'm not sure he knows what ball is coming next. Cricket's Tino Asprilla.

It's almost time for lunch in Galle, and breakfast in Salford. England have taken 2-81 this morning.
