Kusal Mendis, what are you doing?!

Twice in a row he charges Jack Leach. The first time he doesn't connect properly but collects four. The second time it clunks horribly off the outer part of his bat and he chips the ball to Moeen Ali running to his left at mid-off.

Leach sprints away in celebration and England are quite rightly delighted. They have been gifted a wicket when Sri Lanka were just starting to look steady.

Poor Stokes. He has bowled his boots off on this turgid pitch since lunch.

That's the second catch England have dropped today. Ben Stokes dropped Karunaratne this morning. That was another sitter although it didn't cost England too badly in the end.

You'd forgive Stokes for getting annoyed at seeing that go down but in fairness he didn't really complain. He gets redder and redder with tiredness as the unsuccessful over comes to an end.

Now Stokes signals for a substitute. His energy-sapping 50-minute spell after lunch looks like coming to an end.

Would you believe it?! The plan works but Jimmy Anderson drops a regulation catch. The bouncer is hit hard by Mathews but it goes straight to Anderson's midriff at mid-wicket and he spills it.

Ben Stokes' shirt is going see-through due to the amount of sweat soaked into it but he's going to bowl at least one more over. Rory Burns comes in again at short leg.

  6. SL 136-3published at 49 overs

    Mendis 40, Mathews 18

Where has the shot leg gone? Jack Leach continues and draws a bit of a false shot from Angelo Mathews but there's no close fielder there to take the catch.

Now another inside edge which pops out onto the off side. Get them back around the bat, Joe!

Stokes touches 89mph. Mighty impressive. This is what England will want him to do in this series when it's not swinging. That might be him done though. He wipes the sweat from his face and stares at Mendis at the end of the over.

  9. SL 134-3published at 47.2 overs

Mathews might have expected this one. He clobbers a pull shot to the fence. Has Stokes got the energy left to get the ball up a little higher?

I think it's time for a change at this end now. Kusal Mendis seems to have got to grips with Jack Leach. Again he sweeps and again it goes for four. There are two right-handers in so it might be time for a bit of Adil.

It's alarming when the most likely-looking wicket taker on the fourth day of this Test match is Ben Stokes. He has been getting every bit of hostility and menace he can muster.

To be honest England's spinners don't look very threatening. They are not beating the bat very often, England could do with something to unsettle these two batsmen. It doesn't feel dangerous.

  13. SL 124-3published at 46 overs

It almost works! Stokes bowls a lovely bouncer at Mendis' grille and the batsman fends the ball away. There are cries of catch but the ball just falls out of the reach of Burns at short leg.

Later in the over Mathews tries to pull and top edges just out of the reach of the diving Foakes.

Great effort in these conditions from Stokes. He signals to Joe Root to demand another over. I wouldn't be arguing.

    The plan is clear.

A fielder at short third man for a catch. A deep square leg. Rory Burns under the helmet at short leg.

Stokes is going to bounce Mendis and Mathews. I like this plan.

  16. SL 119-3published at 45 overs

    Mendis 34, Mathews 8

Angelo Mathews has been watchful so far. How long this match lasts and how close Sri Lanka get to saving it probably depends a lot on him.

Like yesterday, Jonny Bairstow seems to be loving his 12th man duties. He has a cheeky grin once again when he jogs out with a drink for Stokes.

Stokes still continues and is bowling quicker than we've seen from anyone so far in this Test. Again Mendis tries to guide a bouncer over the slips. This time he's on one knee as he does it. Stokes isn't impressed with the shot and has a little word. England send a man back for the catch.

    Another bouncer...

Excellent again. Stokes jumps wide of the crease in the style of his Durham team-mate Mark Wood and zips one past the gloves.
