The stadium DJ at Galle has a varied playlist doesn't he? We were laughing at a bit of Bon Jovi to welcome Ben Stokes to the crease the other day and he's now gone for a touch of 'Always on my Mind'. We think Pet Shop Boys version but hard to be 100% sure.

Dhananjaya de Silva is the new batsman, remember that Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal can't bat until later on, if at all, because of his injury.

Spin was always likely to bring the first wicket of the day and England are up and running now. Warm applause signals the end of the over.

  3. wicket

Another fundamentally awful review from Sri Lanka, Kaushal Silva was stone dead in front of the stumps, the ball would have hit middle half way up.

Jack Leach, the decathlete of deep midwicket, has a wicket. Nice ball.

Drinks breaks should be banned. By my reckoning, that's a wicket every day in the first over after a drink.

The drinks break curse has struck! Jack Leach has a wicket here, or does he? Sri Lanka are going for a review...

  5. SL 51-0published at 22.3 overs

I've seen more exciting hours of Test cricket, if we're being honest. Sri Lanka have parked the bus, and who can blame them in this position.

They have got to bat for two solid days without Geoffrey Boycott in their XI. They've coughed up one chance so far...

Drinks signal an hour's play. Tea, no sugar if you're making.

  9. SL 51-0published at 22 overs

    Silva 30, Karunaratne 21

Sri Lanka have 50 up, more good work from Moeen though, hurrying Dimuth Karunaratne up a touch and he squirts the ball between the legs of Rory Burns at short leg. Not a chance, per se, but a minor moment of worry for the opener.

Your brain is a wonderful thing Mark. What has made you put those two together? The enigma of the baize.

I'm going to say Leach looks like a hybrid of snooker player Mark King and Derren Brown.

I think this is a good shout. But I have been awake since 2:30 this morning.

I'm not making excuses for Ben Stokes but that catch did have an odd trajectory to it. The ball skimmed the gloves of Ben Foakes and dropped sharply in front of him.

Foakes/Stokes maybe got in each other's way a touch too. Jack Leach doesn't engineer a chance in his over. Thinking about his javelin technique instead.

Alex Penwill: Leach has an excellent arm ball which is super effective to the right hander. Would like to see him bowl it a bit more.

Catch that! Ah, Ben Stokes has shelled one at slip and his reaction says it all. Head in hands for a good 30 seconds, he can't look Moeen in the eye.

It was a lovely ball too, drifting in and spinning away from Dimuth Karunaratne, who edged it past Ben Foakes and to Stokes, who was a bit late on it. He got fingers to it but couldn't cling on.

Spin from both ends - Moeen is on for Jimmy.

  18. SL 42-0published at 19 overs

Jack Leach, fresh from his decathlon, drifts leg side and that's a single, Joe Root thinks about a run-out attempt but forgets how to throw the ball, dlipping it up over his own head.

Dimuth Karunaratne was never in trouble I don't think.

Greeny: I think this could be a close finish. If Jennings can make 146 not out then a couple of the Sri Lanka batsmen can as well.

I really can’t emphasise enough how much rain fell in Galle last night.

It is extremely wet and muddy around the perimeter of the boundary, but that full ground covering did the job again and conditions seem absolutely fine out in the middle.

The sun is now beaming down with a stronger breeze blowing the flags up on the fort and against all the odds we could be in for another full day's play here.
