    De Silva 17, Mendis 15

These two have piled on almost 30 in no time at all. Maybe that's why Joe Root is being consersative with his fields, for my tastes anyway.

Jack Leach is bowling nicely. He's still one of the favourites to miss out in the great forthcoming Jonny Bairstow cabinet reshuffle though.

Four! Kusal Mendis flicks Adil Rashid away, good shot that. The office chat, if you're wondering, is whether you can still buy teasmaids. You can. And why have I never had/used one?

  3. SL 80-2published at 32 overs

Jack Leach is getting some good consistent turn away from the batsmen now. He's got two slips. England lead by 382 - get some more up there!

  4. SL 78-2published at 31 overs

Just a four off the last ball of of Adil Rashid's over there.

Beauty! Jack Leach beats Kusal Mendis all ends up, slower ball, spin and bounce, lovely stuff. It beats the edge though as well.

Bowled, Deano. Again he finds a false shot from Dhananjaya de Silva. Sorry to labour the point but any chance of more fielders around the bat?!

  8. SL 72-2published at 29 overs

Not for the first time in this Test, I've missed an entire over there. WIth two spinners on they don't mess about. There was one from it.

Jack Leach has swapped ends now.

After a short period of calm, Sri Lanka’s top order batting is following a familiar pattern in this match.

They’ve got two days to bat yet Kaushal Silva swept a straight ball from Leach and Karunaratne played a wild drive to Moeen reminiscent of Moeen’s own dismissal around the same time yesterday.

    Whatever happened to defence?

    Good morning!

After a wicketless first hour, England are starting to make their way through the Sri Lanka top order.

In the last 30 minutes they have dismissed both of the hosts' openers.

Kaushal Silva was first to go, lbw to Jack Leach, and then Moeen Ali had Dimuth Karunaratne caught and bowled soon after.

England need eight more wickets to wrap up victory. Sri Lanka still need close to another 400 runs.

I couldn't agree more Julian. How are the mighty boosh going?

You could let Sri Lanka score at 10 an over here, couldn't you? They might do, Dhananjaya de Silva comes down the track to Moeen and slams it away for six. That's alright, keep the men up Joe Root!

A friend of mine once missed the entire first session of a Test after a prolonged session of his own the night before and was asked to leave before the end of play. A stellar/Stella effort.

Have you ever seen a man pelted by 10,000 cardboard drinks holders?

One off the over for Jack Leach.

    Barmy Army

A few sore heads among the Barmy Army this morning following a rather waterlogged beach party at Unawatuna last night.

A few, I’m hearing, are coming to the ground “a little later” after a lie-in.

It’s been slightly quieter in the stands this morning, but that Leach wicket has woken people up.

They are hoping for an 'I was there moment', with England inching towards a first ever victory at this ground.

  16. SL 61-2published at 26 overs

Two new batsmen at the wicket, men round the bat. England could wrap this up before breakfast.

Kusal Mendis is the new man out there. And he spoons one up in the air straight away. Not enough men around the bat, evidently.

Get Shane Warne's field to Dean Headley out there!

Not many dismissals make a batsman look more silly than a caught and bowled do they?Maybe an elaborate leave to one that hits off stump.

Moeen Ali floats one up, opener Dimuth Karunaratne can't resist the opportunity to club one over the top but he doesn't get hold of it and can only hit it straight back at the bowler, who holds on sharply.

    That's Moeen's 150th Test wicket.

  18. SL 59-1published at 25 overs

They don't have a great record in this match. Jack Leach gets a bit more spin and Dhananjaya de Silva squeezes a single past Ben Foakes.

Arjun Singh: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team worse at using the DRS than Sri Lanka. That was the most plumb LBW of the match, and Kaushal would surely have known if he’d hit it.

Keaton Jennings was last night equating the scrutiny he was under last summer to living in a fishbowl.

Well, rather strangely, in the far corner of the reception of the Mahinda Rajapaksa pavilion at Galle there is a fish tank which for some reason is today under armed guard!
