Yes, Tom. Excellent shout. Other bat providers are available. Got to keep my boss happy by saying that.

An over after I complimented Jack Leach's accuracy he now concedes his first boundary. The Somerset spinner drifts a little bit too far to leg and Mendis sweeps behind square for four.

It's all very quiet for the rest of the over.

I'm half expecting Ben Foakes to just pluck a fly out of the air between his thumb and finger in this match. He continues to impress. This time England's denutant wicketkeeper dives well down the leg side to take a catch.

Stokes mixes it up well in this over. A bouncer, a slower ball and another at 87mph. There's no help for him from the pitch.

I think the bowlers like to keep the batsmen to two or three singles an over, rather than going for a couple of boundaries. It makes them feel like they have a semblance of control.

I understand why you protect the boundaries sometimes - like in the first innings - but in this instance, get the field in and try to get Mathews to hit the ball over the top at least once.

    Mendis 24, Mathews 3

There's no massive turn for Jack Leach. This pitch is still yet to seriously break up. He's very tidy though. Leach is yet to concede a boundary in 12 overs.

Lewis Doel: is the Curran/Anderson opening partnership the biggest age gap between two opening bowlers in tests?

Fine question. That's a 16-year gap. Almost enough to be father and son...

There's another bouncer from Stokes. Good stuff. Kusal Mendis this time has to quickly bend his knees to stop the leather hitting him in the mush.

Stokes is encouraged and bowls another short one and this time Mendis curiously tries to flick the ball up over the slips. I'm not sure that's the way to play.

Runners are definitely the thing I miss most. There was nothing like the comedy that ensued when you had a runner in the middle and another batsman limping on one leg.

Jack Leach's whites are filthy. He looks like he's landed in a muddy sandpit doing his long jump. If you've just woken up you won't get this reference but the picture below should help.

It'll be Jack Leach to bowl the first full over after lunch for England.

That Stokes bouncer was one of the quickest deliveries of the match in that it went through at head height. Mathews played it well though, dropping his hands.

    Mendis 21, Mathews 0

    Greetings, Angelo.

Ben Stokes bends his back and bowls a nasty bouncer to Sri Lanka's former captain first up. Mathews weaves like Ali (Muhammad not Moeen) to get out of the way.

We have not seen any of that on this pitch.

    Here come the players.

Angelo Mathews is the new batsman who is yet to face a ball.

Ben Stokes still has four balls of his over from before lunch to bowl.

Rangana Herath has retired now, with 430 wickets to his name.

Now, I know he works with us, but he's not in today and he definitely won't be up, but Phil Tufnell would have been outstanding in this era, with DRS. He would have had an impact like Graeme Swann.

I have been to Sri Lanka a few times but I have never seen rain like it last night, it was relentless and hammered down but I don't know where the water went. It was incredible.

England haven't overly impressed with their bowling. Jack Leach was steady, Moeen picked up a wicket from a terrible shot and Dhananjay de Silva was so wild and wide at the end.

It's still a decent pitch. Not a single ball has exploded out of the rough.

  18. What you've missedpublished at 07:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2018

England are well on their way to victory.

They did not take a wicket in the first hour but since then they've dismissed three Sri Lankan batsmen before lunch .

The openers were first to go with Jack Leach dismissing the sweeping Kushal Silva and then Moeen Ali getting Dimuth Karunaratne caught and bowled.

And just before the interval Ben Stokes ensured the lunch will taste that little bit better.

He had Dhananjaya de Silva caught at slip for 21 on the final ball before the break.

It came just a ball after thought Stokes he had dismissed Dhananjaya, only for the caught behind to be overturned on review.

England need seven wickets for victory.

England have played so well haven't they? Keaton Jennings was superb, England are trying to find a replacement for Alastair Cook and at the first attempt he played a wonderful innings.

These are perfect wickets for top order play. There is no lateral movement which has been Jennings' downfall. As a batsman you would fancy this tour, and the trip to the West Indies, to add plenty of runs.

Moeen Ali chipped in with England's second wicket this morning.

A few overs earlier Ben Stokes had dropped Dimuth Karunaratne at slip off Moeen but England's off-spinning all-rounder eventually did take his wicket, doing the catching himself off his own bowling.

It was a rubbish shot in the circumstances from Karunaratne. He took a step down the pitch and tried to whack Moeen down the ground in the air but just hit the ball straight back at Moeen.
