  1. SL 40-0published at 18 overs

    Anderson 0-13

Jimmy Anderson takes another trip into the red zone in the middle of the pitch, he was warned about that by the umpires the other day. No action taken yet as far as I can tell.

Sri Lanka have trundled on to 40 with no real concern this morning. Only another 422 to go...

Three days into his Test career and he's got a chant!

The England fans can now do a Ben Foakes/Graeme Swann Oasis medley. Just need to work Keaton Jennings into Bring it on Down...

Dean Macey, left, and Jack Leach - lookalikes?

Who does Jack Leach look like? It's been bugging me all week. Dean Macey?

Some left-arm spin, he shapes it in nicely but he's worked away for a single. Some turn there though, Ben Foakes caught out a touch down the leg side.

  5. SL 35-0published at 16 overs

Jimmy Anderson continues for now, working away but it's hard work out there at the moment. Getting 10 wickets isn't going to be a cakewalk for England.

    Time for spin!

  6. SL 33-0published at 15 overs

    England lead by 430

We admire your dedication Jonny. Stick with us, to the bitter end. I've been getting up when I usually go to bed, it's all a bit odd.

England haven't listened to you just yet though as Sam Curran continues, Kaushal Silva helping himself to a couple with no more than a push into the off side. Jack Leach does a bit of a stretch which may be good news for you Jonny...

Jimmy Anderson finds an edge even on this pudding of a pitch, but it's well played by Dimuth Karunaratne. Soft hands, played down into the turf and it's never a moment of danger as he guides it toward the cordon.

Rory Burns, whacked on the head the other day, has the helmet on as he moves into a sort of close-in third slip. Funky fields.

RE Harry's 30-hour trip to Colombo, it looks like it's an 11-hour flight from London so if he has to go on either the M25 or M6 on his way this end I'd suggest 30 hours is not long enough.

Two Lancashire legends out on the field a little earlier this morning. One of those men has a Test best of 214 not out!

Sam Curran trundles in from the other end, nice shape to his bowling but there's a boundary, Kaushal Silva just helping the ball on its way to the third man fence. The overnight rain doesn't quite stop the ball.

  12. SL 22-0published at 12 overs

That's a bit of nip from Jimmy Anderson, back into the right hander but that's too high. Surely we'll get spin on soon.

Sri Lanka only need another 440 to win. Get a shift on, England.

  15. How will Leach fare?published at 04:43 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2018

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

A miracle we are starting on time after rain of biblical proportions last night

Today I will be particularly interested in how England’s spinners get on and I am especially keen to see how Jack Leach fares on a surface that should help him.

What England would really like is for one ball early on to do something unsettling and create some doubt in the Sri Lanka dressing room. But so far in this match we haven’t really seen that despite reports that this Galle pitch would be a minefield.

  16. SL 19-0published at 10 overs

You have to allow 20 hours to get to the airport this end Martin, thanks to the state of our motorways etc...

How long is a flight from the UK to Sri Lanka? Genuinely no idea.

I'll get off my soapbox as Jimmy Anderson gets the men behind the stumps interested, good ball which hits Dimuth Karunaratne on the knee roll - that pitched outside leg though.

Does anyone hold out any hope at all of Sri Lanka saving this Test? Anderson finds an edge, soft hands though and it drops a good four or five feet short of the slips. This pitch is slower than an episode of Call the Midwife.

Kaushal Silva gets runs on the board with a push through the off side off the bowling of Sam Curran. Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal, who missed the whole day's play yesterday after injuring his groin earlier in the match, cannot bat until the afternoon session.

If he does at all. He watches on from the balcony.
