Malinga can wield the willow, despite a modest ODI average of 7.02 he has made one fifty, although that was back in 2010 it has to be said. He gets off the mark in style, however, backing away and launching Dawlat down the ground for four.

A few flecks of blue sky as the players return to the centre but there are spots of rain on the camera lens as Dawlat runs in to resume. Eight overs left for the Sri Lankans.

A reminder that Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have met three times before in ODI cricket, the Sri Lankans claiming the first two encounters in 2014 and 2015 but Afghanistan winning the most recent contest in September last year by 91 runs.

Oscar Livesey: No such thing as a neutral in Cardiff today, I've been converted in to an Afghan follower today hoping Shahzad can hit the ball into the River Taff whilst listening to an Afghanistan version of Sweet Caroline.

As part of the rescheduled game, no bowler can bowl more than nine overs so Afghanistan's star bowler Mohammad Nabi will not be able to trouble the batsmen again. The spinner finishes with the excellent figures of 4-30 from his nine.

When there is rain falling you can't resume a match, it's just one of the vagaries of cricket. It's exceptionally light, you can't really tell that it's falling.

We have a resumption time but unfortunately we have some drizzly rain in the air.

We have news. Play will resume at 16:00 BST and it will become a 41 overs per side match. This means Sri Lanka will have eight overs to try and muster some more from their current 182, with only two wickets remaining.

Those weather forecasters are never wrong are they? The skies have lifted in Cardiff and the groundstaff have begun the clearing up operation. There will be an inspection in 10 minutes but the prospects for play look more promising. More soon.

Hello again, it's still hammering it down in Cardiff but there are a hardy band of supporters still at the stadium who seem to be enjoying themselves, despite the elements. Huddling together for shelter, they are taking in the music being played on the PA system and remain hopeful.

The position is that play has to resume by 17:51 BST or the match will be abandoned and it will be one point each. Now the Cardiff groundstaff are used to mopping up the rain, it has to be said, so if it does stop raining their expertise will be invaluable. More news as we get it. Coverage continues on TMS and there is live text from the French Open, where Johanna Konta has sailed into the semi-finals. Cheerio for now.

  13. Farewell for nowpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

It's still raining in Cardiff so we wait to see if the Sri Lankans will be able to resume their innings, which stands at 182-8 after 33 overs. They may not bat again and Afghanistan may be set a revised target. The weather is expected to clear and the permutations are plentiful, but we are going to leave you for now. Rest assured we will be straight back with any further updates, but cheerio for now.

Yes it seems a far cry from the great Sri Lankan teams of Jayasuriya, Sangakkara, Jayawardene and Murali. The Sri Lankans, winners of the 1996 World Cup and finalists in 2007 and 2011, have lost 17 of their last 21 completed matches and have slipped to ninth in the one-day rankings.

There is no questioning the skill set of the Sri Lanka players. They are world class and can play - we know that.

But when you are in a long spell of poor performance it is about the way in which you approach the game, approach training and approach certain situations.

Their 'game-sense' has been really shown up today, particularly off the back of a fantastic start.

Just before the rain forced the players off the field, top-scorer Kusal Perera departed as his attempted reverse sweep was snaffled by Shahzad and it was a spell of 7-36 in 11 overs.

With regards to Udana's ungainly exit: I watched the clip and found it to be a perfectly respectable heave to leg. As a proud number 11 batsman of Pledwick C.C. 1st XI (Pontefract League, West Yorkshire) I try and play as many of these as possible every Saturday afternoon.

We'll be kind to Udana and show his six - the only one of the innings to date - but then we'll see him trying to repeat the stroke with rather less success.

  19. Postpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

The rain is still falling heavily in Cardiff so we will continue with the highlights and it was raining wickets earlier. As so often happens in a dramatic collapse there was a dreadful run out - and this one was a mix-up between the Pereras - sounds painful doesn't it?

  20. Postpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

Perera duly reached fifty in the 17th over but the innings changed completely in the 22nd over as spinner Nabi claimed three wickets, leaving the Sri Lankan dressing room in disarray - not for the first time recently.
