  1. Eng 20-1published at 10 overs

    Burns 7, Denly 13

    Oof. It's all happening now.

Shannon Gabriel pitches it up, the ball pings off the turf, jumps up and strikes Joe Denly on the gloves. That looked uncomfortable.

But there is nothing uncomfortable about the next shot as Denly latches on to a shortish delivery and pulls through mid-on for four. A nice touch of aggression there.

And then Denly plays at a wide one and a thick edge flies just past the slips and down to the boundary. The West Indies fielders with hands on their heads.

You can see how dry the pitch is. That is why England have batted first. They are thinking 'what will it do today compared to the final day?'.

Also, this team has been a lot more successful batting first rather than chasing the game batting second.

They are just a better team when they bat first.

  3. Eng 12-1published at 15:50 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

No change in the bowling just yet as Kemar Roach continues and Burns sees out a maiden over with some textbook defending.

A watchful approach is needed here from England.

These conditions will suit Jason Holder's bowling.

It has been a tremendous start from West Indies.

  5. Eng 12-1published at 8 overs

    Burns 7, Denly 5

Burns just has one of those looks, right? He'll have several doppelgangers no doubt.

Short and wide from Gabriel and Denly pounces, cutting past gully for four. That will do his confidence no harm.

    England move into double figures.

Roach bowls a cracking delivery to Joe Denly. Some great carry off the pitch, late movement as Denly plays inside the line. There was a muted appeal there from Roach. More a case of admiring his own bowling than a serious attempt at an appeal.

    Maiden.

Gabriel bowls at Burns' legs and the opener clips it through mid-wicket to give England their first boundary of the game. Of the series. And of the summer. Welcome runs for the hosts.

With the crowd noise pumping through my headphones, you almost forget there's no crowd. Until the cameras pan to a wide shot.

Denly would be better off putting the drive in the bag for a little while with the movement we have seen.

  14. Eng 3-1published at 15:33 British Summer Time 8 July 2020

    Burns 2, Denly 1

It's dark, it's gloomy. But the lights are on and there's no rain.

Roach tempts Denly in with a full delivery just outside the line, the England batsman wafting at thin air with a play and a miss.

The ball is doing a bit.

When I woke up this morning like a kid at Christmas, buzzing that cricket was returning, I didn't think Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen would make an appearance on the live text.

The players are back out there. Roach to Denly.

Great shout, Lesley. Any other Rory Burns lookalike suggestions?

Right then, 10 more minutes until play restarts.

England have scored three runs. And we've had just as many rain delays. I think. I've sort of lost count.
