The thing about watching a match in an empty ground is you can hear the umpires talking to the players, even from 100 yards away. "It's the light. We'll take tea." And off they go.

And they have taken tea. So then, it's been a stop-start few hours but at least we've seen some cricket, eh? At one point today we did kind of wonder if that would even happen.

Urgh. Bad light stops play. Surely they'll take an early tea?

Joe Denly is in the wars today. He has already taken a couple on the gloves and this time he fends off Alzarri Joseph with the forearm.

Hold on, it doesn't look like it's raining but the umpires are meeting in the middle...

Peter Jackson Eastwood: Extremely impressed with how angry Alzarri Joseph is whenever I see him. For me, up there with Andre Nel in the elite grumpiness stakes.

Is it a Sparrow? Is it a plane? No, it's Rory Burns.

Joe Denly is beaten yet again as Jason Holder squares him up with a tighter line. That was a beaut of a delivery.

Denly has played a couple of decent shots today but he has by no means settled in yet.

    One from the over.

Back-to-back maidens from the tourists as Alzarri Joseph races through his third over. A much better line there from the paceman.

A subdued atmosphere in Southampton. The crowd have been pretty quiet. Oh, wait.

When did England last have a top four with four recognised openers? Rather different to last summer when we didn't even have a top two of recognised openers.

Joe Denly edges Holder and it falls just short of John Campbell at third slip. Played with soft hands by Denly but a genuine edge.

A reminder that Tea will be taken at 17:00 BST (weather-permitting) - England will be hoping they can get through without losing a second wicket.

Statistician Andy Zaltzman told me the number of Test caps the England batsmen have. This is going to the most inexperienced England top four since the fifth Test against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1989.

Another loose first ball of the over from Joseph as Rory Burns moves into the twenties with a cut through back-ward point for four. He gave that a proper punch.

A composed innings so far from the England opener.

Kemar Roach's opening spell of six overs for two runs is the most economical opening six overs in England since 2010.

Time for a bit of Jason Holder now, who replaces Kemar Roach in the attack.

Holder suggested earlier this week that he doesn't get the recognition he might deserve, despite being the ICC number one ranked all-rounder.

And it's a bright start by the West Indies' captain. He gets one to jag away and it strikes Joe Denly on the bottom hand. Lots of bounce, movement and carry.

    Two from the over.

Freddie Levy's dad here. We are just getting him ready for the first test of the summer. He said he would go for a nap before play. He's also finding it quite difficult dealing with all the attention what with it being his first UK Test.

It's not going to be Jason Holder. Instead it's 23-year-old Alzarri Joseph who comes into the attack. He's got some talent, this lad.

Although it's a bit of a loosener first up on the pads of Burns, who flicks it square for four.

He adds three more to his score with an assured cover drive.

Since the Headingley Ashes Test last year, Joe Denly has been averaging a fraction under 35 and has been dismissed once every 95 balls. He has been one of the hardest England batsmen to get out.

Prior to that he averaged 23 and was out once every 46 balls.

He has scored a lot slower but has been twice as hard to dismiss.

Kemar Roach struggles with his line as the England batsmen easily leave a few wide deliveries.

Just a Burns single from that over. Time for a bowling change? Will Jason Holder bring himself on?
