Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The first hour was attritional but exactly what you need to do once you've lost an early one. You've got to understand that West Indies have got an issue with Shannon Gabriel, we'll have to see how he comes back from that.

Joe Root is playing exactly how I want him to in Test cricket. Give yourself a chance and don't go chasing it.

  2. Eng 23-1published at 13 overs

Root and Burns exchange singles. Another fine over by Holder.

It looked a bit leg-side ish that one. It just didn't look right.

  4. Eng 21-1published at 12.2 overs

Jason Holder gets it on to Joe Root's pads and there is a brief appeal but nothing doing.

    High and going down leg.

Here is how Gabriel left the field.

Will he be back bowling this session?

He can't bowl again until the same time he spent off the field has elapsed, which will be just before the lunch break.

    Made it.

Might have to adopt the Felix White 'how to make a tea during the course of one over' technique outside of drinks breaks though.

Tell you who else has made it back - Shannon Gabriel returns to the field after limping off during an over earlier on.

    Daniel Norcross
    BBC Test Match Special

We've got an intriguing game of cricket on our hands. West Indies would have felt they were on top with that early breakthrough.

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

Dom Sibley is the first England opener to have two ducks, a fifty and a hundred in a home series since Graeme Fowler against the West Indies in 1984.

Everything was right about that shot - a nice high elbow and perfect execution.

First four off the bat today as Rory Burns gets forward to crunch it square through cover.

In light of the sartorial choices of messrs Agnew and Norcross today (see below), we want your suggestions for the greatest accessory worn by a cricketer.

I'll open it up with Shivnarine Chanderpaul's anti-glare patches.

    Vic Marks
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Joe Root has not looked at ease. It was almost a half-volley length but not quite. It enticed him to drive and a little of swing perhaps and the ball kept going and he could have easily nicked that. He got a look from Jason Holder.

  14. Eng 17-1published at 11 overs

Really good battle between the captains as Jason Holder beats the outside edge of Joe Root's bat.

Ooosh. Root goes for a big drive last up and the ball hoops past his edge again.

Daniel Norcross appears to have converted a Christmas tablecloth into a jacket.

And is that a knitted bow tie?

Dan Norcross is about to come on to replace me and I must say he is looking sharp!

  18. Eng 16-1published at 10 overs

Kemar Roach will continue after replacing the injured Shannon Gabriel.

Rory Burns and Joe Root both pick up a single.

Slow going for England so far - no boundaries off the bat yet.
