George Goddard: Very happy with that England team. If I was on cricket captain, it's what I'd have done, but never thought they'd actually do it. Really strong bowling attack that.

Andy Stevens: Feel for Zak Crawley, and I am not sure I like the look of Joe Root at 3 if Sibley or Burns fail. On the other hand, the Eng bowling attack looks very tasty.

  2. Eng 1-0published at 0.2 overs

Roach sends his first ball to Dom Sibley down wide and - can I just shock you? - Sibley leaves it well alone.

How many leaves can he rack up today?

  3. Eng 1-0published at 0.1 overs

Kemar Roach to Rory Burns and the England openers gets off the mark straight away, tapping it through square leg for a single.

The entire West Indies team, except bowler Kemar Roach who stays at his mark, gather in the slip cordon to take a knee to mark the Black Lives Matter movement.

Burns and Sibley also take a knee in their respective creases.

    First ball coming up...

If West Indies get the ball in the right zone this morning and pick two or three early wickets up England could be under a lot of pressure with this batting line-up.

Dom Sibley and Rory Burns stride out to the middle.

Big first hour here. England's ideal outcome is to bat big and bat once, using that extended bowling attack to take 20 quick wickets to counter the threat of rain.

If West Indies skittle the England top order, then they can look to bat the hosts out of the game.

There is a lot of chopping and changing from England. Should Jason Holder have bowled first? I suppose we'll know by how the start goes but I'd look at the England team and think they are only one or two wickets away from being all out from 150. It'll be important for Dom Sibley and Rory Burns to bat as long as possible.

Joe Root has gone full David Willey with the Alice band to keep back his lockdown locks.

West Indies conduct a huddle and jog out to their fielding positions.

The logic of England omitting a batsman is sound. In order to win the Test, they need to take 20 wickets, and without Stokes being able to bowl, they still wanted five options to attempt to do that. You wonder if Sam Curran's left-arm would have provided more variety than Chris Woakes becoming a fourth right-armer, but Woakes is probably a better bet at number seven. The decision to leave out Zak Crawley instead of Ollie Pope is interesting too. Pope is backed as a future star, but Crawley is the man who has got runs this series. Without him, Joe Root is moving to three, which we know he isn't a fan of.

  11. Ben Stokes the off-spinner?!published at 10:57 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

England's Ben Stokes, speaking to Sky Sports: "The body has been better but we're in the situation where everyone had to throw everything they had at them. Yesterday I tested my quads and I was worried I wouldn't be able to offer everything I want to with the ball, certainly in the first inningst. Hopefully it'll settle down and [smiles] I'll be able to rock and roll some off-spin later in the Test."

Not sure why they have gone for Woakes over Curran? Woakes as a right-arm medium seamer is not needed with Broad and Anderson there. Curran's left-arm option would have made much more sense, always gets the wicket when needed!

Chris Silverwood said earlier in the week he was going to play his best attack and James Anderson and Stuart Broad are clearly in that. If they'd won the first Test at Southampton I'm not sure that would be the case now because they are looking to build for the future but you've got to take care of the here and now. England have to win this series.

  15. 'A small chance Stokes may bowl'published at 10:52 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

England captain Joe Root on TMS: "It's a must-win game for us, we want to give ourselves the best chance of taking 20 wickets. There might be a small chance by the end of the game that Ben Stokes can bowl but he's a crucial player for us and we don't want to do damage to him that can be avoided.

"It'll be five days hard cricket, as the first two Tests have been. The attitude is the most important thing for me, and if we do the same as last week we'll give ourselves a great chance and that's all we can ever ask for and that's all I ever expect from the guys."

On the batting line-up: "I'll be batting at three, there is an opportunity to go out there and score big runs. Hopefully the top two build a platform and we can go from there."

  17. Ruth Strauss Foundation Daypublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 24 July 2020

Emirates Old Trafford is decked out in even more red that usual because today is the second Ruth Strauss Foundation Day.

The foundation was set up in memory of former England captain Andrew Strauss' wife Ruth, who sadly died in 2018 after being diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers.

Andrew Strauss spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier this week about what the day means to him.

"We were so blown away last year, first day of the Ashes Test at Lord's and seeing the cricket ground turning red as the spectators came in – it was an incredible sight to see for myself and my boys, we felt the connection, empathy and support from everyone for our unique story," he said.

"This year obviously we can’t do that, it’s going to be virtual support, we are encouraging everyone to wear red who’s going to watch the Test match and post photos of themselves wearing red on social media. Hopefully we can find ways of people donating to our foundation along the way.

"The Test match is going to be different but it shouldn’t stop us doing this, we are more determined and passionate than ever to try and create the worthwhile legacy for Ruth’s name to make sure her spirit lives on."

West Indies captain Jason Holder on TMS: "I've heard about 1988 a lot in the press (the last time West Indies won a series in England) but we haven't been studying it a lot, it's just about us controlling what we can do.

"We came here to win the series, the guys have done a really good job so far and it's just one last push. It's been tough being in the bubble so it's just a mental push from here, the guys have prepared really well."

England's top order will need to perform well today.

Is Jos Buttler at six and Chris Woakes at seven a bit light on batting?

That said, moving an in-form Ben Stokes to four is hardly weakening your middle order.
