WICKETpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Hain c Hildreth b J Overton 7 (Warks 121 & 24-2 v Somerset 413-9 dec)

It really is Jamie Overton's day, isn't it?

He follows up his 120 with the bat with an early wicket, albeit aided by a senseless swipe from Sam Hain to James Hildreth that continues the Warwickshire batsman's rotten run of form this summer.

Overton was almost on a hat-trick, nearly getting a nick off the first ball Ian Bell faced. The partnership between the ex-England man and skipper Will Rhodes is going to be vital for the Bears if they are to avoid defeat.

  2. Postpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Glos 80-3 v Glamorgan 116

Gloucestershire are closing in on Glamorgan's first-innings total but not without cost - Graeme van Buuren has become the third batsman to fall and the second victim of Timm van der Gugten.

    Clean bowled that one.

Tom Lace is still there for Glos, 37no on his debut after his move from Middlesex.

    Wheater c Brown b Meaker 6 (Sussex 194 v Essex 90-6)

    Stuart MeakerImage source, PA Media

Essex lose another one at Hove as Stuart Meaker digs in a short one, Adam Wheater tried to pull and under-edges to the keeper.

There was a time when Meaker was considered good enough to play a few limited-overs games for England and that is his first wicket fior Sussex since making the move from Surrey.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Patel c Croft b Livingstone 0 (Nottinghamshire 429-7 v Lancashire)

Here comes Liam Livingstone with his gentle off-breaks and Samit Patel hoists the first ball he has faced to the fielder at deep mid-wicket.

Matt Carter is the new batsman and he cover drives his first delivery to the extra cover boundary. Less physical effort, much better result.

  5. Notts lose Moorespublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Nottinghamshire 425-6 v Lancashire

You presume Notts must have a total in mind here because it's hard to see why the declaration hasn't happened yet.

They haven't won a red-ball game since 2018 and have only four and a bit sessions left to bowl Lancashire out twice.

Skipper Steven Mullaney is 46 not out as Tom Moores smears a ball from Liam Hurt into the deep and is caught for 18.

  6. Postpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Warks 121 & 18-1 v Somerset 413-9

A couple of maiden overs from Craig Overton and Josh Davey for Somerset at Edgbaston.

There might be a few more of them to come as Warwickshire batsmen Will Rhodes and Sam Hain are taking no chances.

The floodlights are on here in Birmingham with light diminishing - all of Somerset's Central Group rivals will be praying for as many interruptions as possible as the leaders seek to close out an innings victory.

Not only can he bowl fast, he can also bat as well. Jamie Overton's 120 for against Warwickshire today was the first century of his career. How sore are you, Somerset fans, that you will be losing him? And how excited are you, Surrey followers, about his arrival at The Oval next season?

WICKETpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Bell-Drummond c Simpson b Cummins 14 (Kent 18-1 v Middlesex 269 all out)

Kent, however, have not made the best of starts to their reply at Canterbury...

Daniel Bell-Drummond tries to get out of the way of a lethal rising ball from Miguel Cummins but can't and nicks a gimme to wicketkeeper John Simpson.

Time for a couple of updates from elsewhere - namely Northampton and Glamorgan where visitors Worcestershire and Gloucestershire are going along nicely enough at 42-1 and 62-2 respectively.

The Pears are in their second innings, though, while Gloucestershire are in their first.

  10. Maximum batting points for Nottspublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Nottinghamshire 411-5 v Lancashire

Steven Mullaney takes a single to square leg as Notts reach 400 and claim their fifth batting point with five balls to spare.

Will the b'away side' declare. Not just yet. They carry on and Tom Moores emphatically pulls a short ball by Liam Hurt away for four. He has 15 not out and Mullaney is on 35.

  11. Postpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Warks 121 & 8-1 v Somerset 413-9 dec

There are going to be no attempts at heroics here from the Bears' batsmen - and rightly so.

Will Rhodes has three runs off 20 balls and Sam Hain is still yet to get off the mark after 14 deliveries.

Warwickshire will want to make Somerset work hard if they are to complete this probable victory.

An important question posed on the Duckworth-Lewis Method album Sticky Wickets.- and a lot of batsmen around the country are having to ask it of themselves at the moment.

  13. Surrey strike first blowpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Surrey 172 v Hampshire 18-1

Surrey have taken their first wicket at Arundel with Felix Organ the man to go for 16.

He offered no shot to a ball from Gus Atkinson which cut back off the seam and was cleaned up.

Felix might not want to watch that one on replay.

We're running out of superlatives for Darren Stevens - so here's a couple of efforts from a pair who know a bit about Kent cricket ...

Having passed 800 career wickets, how many can the 44-year-old reach? Will he ever retire? Let's hope not. We all love him, don't we? Gives hope to us all!

Madsen lbw Patterson 0 (Yorkshire 400-6 dec v Derbyshire 58-2)

It's raining wickets now, whereas yesterday it was raining, well, rain.

That's a good one from Yorkshire skipper Steven Patterson which cuts back just enough to beat Wayne Madsen's defensive stroke and he is gone for a six-ball duck.

Surely even Somerset can't wrap up a win in three days having been rained off for half of it?

What was Rob Yates thinking there? He leaves an inswinger from Josh Davey that tucks in just nicely enough to remove the Bears' opener's bails.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Ten Doeschate c Salt b Haines 13 (Sussex 194 v Essex 60-5)

Tom Haines doesn't look especially menacing with his medium-pace bowling which might in bygone times have been described as 'military'.

But he got enough nip off the pitch there to find the edge f Ryan ten Doeschate's bat and Phil Salt spins smartly to his right at first slip to take it.

Essex in some strife at Hove.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Wood c and b Thompson 26 (Yorkshire 400-6 dec v Derbyshire 58-1)

That is unlucky. Tom Wood inside edges onto his pad and the ball lobs into the leg-side with sufficient height to allow bowler Jordan Thompson to run across and claim a return catch.

Wayne Madsen comes out to join Billy Godleman, who is 19 not out.

WICKET - AND ALL OUTpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

Walallawita lbw b Stevens 11 (Middlesex 269 all out v Kent)

Two batting points for Middlesex and three bowling points for Kent, then - and just the three and a half days' work to achieve them...

A five-for for the ageless Darren Stevens as he traps last man Thilan Walallawita leg before. Fred Klaassen has taken four wickets too.

Difficult to tell who has the advantage here but Middlesex certainly recovered well from 68-4 thanks chiefly to Robbie White's near-century 99. Still feel sorry for him now.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    Trego c Davies b Bailey 1 (Nottinghamshire 378-5 v Lancashire)

We take that back (see 14:37 entry).

It's an absolute jaffa from Tom Bailey and Peter Trego, facing only his second delivery, can do no more than edge to the keeper as it leaves him off the pitch.

Tom Moores - following a century against Yorkshire last week - joins Steven Mullaney.
