Embuldeniya would probably win that battle if it wasn't for Root's batting. The left-hander skips down the pitch again and batters away a four into the leg side.
Crucial, crucial runs.

Shuvam: This game is basically Embuldeniya vs England now.
The ball raced away for four off Embuldeniya's edge there too. The lead is 129.
Root has missed three chances this morning. Things could have been even better. It's hard to call that last one a drop. Root didn't even go for it.

I can't believe what I've seen in the last two hours. I've been saying all along that this has five-day thriller written all over it, and now I can't see it going past tonight.
Edged between keeper and slip! It's Root's catch but he's not even got close. Is he too wide?

Suranga Lakmal looks the part. Cap still on, bat over his shoulder between balls and a finger held up to the umpire to ask how many balls are to come.
When he defends he looks good. When he attacks, less so.

This is Suranga Lakmal's 62nd Test. In his first 31 Tests, he averaged 8.1 and was dismissed every 20 balls. In the latter half of his career, he averages 13.8 and is dismissed every 26 balls.
Ha. What was I saying? Suranga Lakmal goes for a big swipe. Fortunately for him the ball skews away into an empty space.
Lakmal 4, Emuldeniya 6
Sri Lanka's numbers nine and 10 are batting far more sensibly than the top order. Embuldeniya, showing he can bat as well as take a seven-for, drives along the ground for four.
The lead creeps to 122.

When you are trying to force a third innings along as a bowling side, it is crucial to get rid of the openers early. If not, you can feel the momentum shift.
Suspiciously, we haven't seen much of him in the last few hours. He's either hiding or has spontaneously combusted in rage.

It has been a woeful batting effort from Sri Lanka.

The word from the England dressing room is Joe Root is fine. He's just nipped for... errrm... a comfort break...
Embuldeniya, who I imagine will have an awful lot of bowling to do pretty soon, is in now. Leach has 4-36.

When England go out to chase down 120 - 130, no reverse sweeps, no quick singles. 4 and half sessions of sensible, patient batting, please.

I'm not sure why Joe Root is off the field - more on that when we get it - but that was Buttler's call for the review. Excellent from the vice-captain.
Sri Lanka lead by 115.

England are really in the box seat now. Sri Lanka have played this appallingly.
R Mendis c Buttler b Leach 16 (SL 78-8)
It's almost identical to how Jos Buttler fell yesterday. Ramesh Mendis has gone for a big sweep, bottom-edged the ball onto his boot and it has looped up for the simplest of catches for the wicketkeeper.
A really good review from England, having just burned one a few minutes before.
This game is showing no signs of slowing down.
