  2. 'We are still in the game'published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

England spinner Jack Leach: "Hard day. Definitely I am feeling it. It was great to see Olly Stone back and Moeen back out there. The magic ball to get Kohli was very special.

"There are balls there on that wicket that are challenging. It got easier when the ball got older and when a partnership gets going you can get a score on the board. We are pleased to get wickets at the end and feel we are still in the game.

"I was pleased with how patient I stayed. I felt in good rhythm. I am just pretending it is Taunton."

It's great England have got the review back but I don't understand because you could clearly see on the TV screen that Joe Root was saying to the umpire out in the middle that it's not the one that's hit the pad, it's the next one we want you to have a look at.

Surely the umpire would have asked from the middle "can you just take a look at the next stage of the replay?"

Luckily for England Rahane was out shortly after but had he still been there on 100 not out; you can't be getting those decisions wrong.

Olly Stone finished the day with 1-42 from his 15 overs. He was very impressive in his second Test.

  5. Third umpire mistake 'inexcusable'published at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

The third umpire has had a stinker. You could argue that Rohit Sharma should have been stumped - it was a tight one. It was the angle from the stumps which he didn't look at for long enough.

Then the Rahane to be caught at short-leg and then the umpire to have not to played the tape a bit longer to see what England wanted him to see, the bounce off the pad and hitting the glove, it's inexcusable in this era of sport.

On Virat Kohli, I've never seen someone dispute being bowled for that long and then the replay being shown to get him off the field.

Rohit Sharma gave a masterclass. He’s one of those players who makes batting look so simple.

That will be the innings we’ll talk about at the end of the Test that potentially has won India the game.

There was Olly Stone's early wicket, Virat Kohli's bizarre dismissal, a stumping that should have been but wasn't, another third umpire shocker but in the end we will remember this as Rohit Sharma's day.

    His 161 was majestic.

It’s playing like a beach out there, England, if they can win this Test from here, on this kind of surface, it will be one of the great England victories, going back through the history of Test cricket.

He's going to have a big job to do with the bat but Foakes special with the gloves, isn't he?

300 on the first day on any pitch is a good effort. From the first session the balls were hitting the surface and exploding. From what I’ve seen today that is playing like a day five wicket already. I’ve never seen a pitch flatten out when big chunks are taken out the surface. India are well on top.

High fives all round between the England players. They look relatively content with the way they have come back in the final session. India were 86-3 but then 248-3.

There are not a lot of players you'd get up at 3:59am to watch. But you will want to do so tomorrow to see Pant play.

  17. Close of play - Ind 300-6published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Pant 33, Axar 5

Pant almost hits the final ball into Moeen Ali's hands at mid-wicket. It drops a few yards short.

That's it at the end of a thrilling day.

    India are in command.

  18. Ind 300-6published at 87.5 overs

Pant, hit on the arm on the previous ball, defends with one hand on the bat.

One delivery to go in the day...

  19. Ind 300-6published at 87.3 overs

You just knew Pant wouldn't be able to resist. Even in the last over he takes on the pull shot and in fairness he nails it for four.

300 up. Another big cheer from the crowd. I think they have really helped the hosts today. It has been the real 'India away' Test for England today.

I like Pant, he's quite the character. I'd like to ask a psychologist how you can get that confident at such a young age.

He can't keep wicket but he can bat. It's like chalk and cheese seeing Ben Foakes and Pant behind the stumps.
