The first ball of the over is left by Pant. Stone has his hands on his head but you have to say it's a good leave.

We are going to have one more over. Olly Stone will bowl it. This series has got a little niggly today.
Pant gets out every trick in the book to try and prevent another over. England aren't happy. In comes Ben Stokes for a word. This has been one of the busiest days of cricket in a long time.

I like that Joe Root is taking the new ball. He's bowling at good pace, swinging arm and jamming it in at good length.
This pitch is looking more and more like an abandoned allotment in the height of summer. Neither side seems keen on another over after this.

Tattz: England's performance today really does bode well for this coming year. Losing the toss on that pitch, seeing Rohit smash it everywhere, suffering some truly bizarre & incompetent umpiring - not once have their heads gone down. Really good from England.
Ah. The first ball with the new nut is a boundary for Axar Patel - his first in Test cricket. India's debutant has a first-class hundred to his name.
England have now taken the new ball. Can they nip out another wicket before the close? They have six minutes to do so.
Olly Stone, England's best bowler today along with Jack Leach, is coming back for a final burst.

Still Root continues with the old ball. One skids on, hitting the pad with the resulting lbw appeal turned down. The next turns big outside off. Batting out there is trickier than A Level algebra.

I can't wait for tomorrow. It's only going to get more action packed. It's not going to settle down at all this game. It's going to be a mad dash to the finishing line, it will be enthralling.
Pant 26, Axar 0
You'd have to give me a pay rise to get in at short leg in a Test. Ollie Pope is almost cleaned by when Pant smashes away a long-hop from Moeen.

Robert: Why does Root not bowl himself more often? He's an excellent spinner and things tend to happen when he's on.
Sam: Joe Ravichandran Root, take a bow.
GR: Root must bowl himself more. Bowled a good length & asked questions of India.
Ben Foakes has been a brilliant bundle of energy behind the stumps today and has gobbled up some great takes. Off he goes, sprinting after a dab into the off side. He slides through the Chennai dirt and breaks the buckle on his keeping pads.

Debutant Axar Patel is the new batsman and he is greeted by a beauty that beats his edge. I've no idea how England are going to cope with Ashwin and this pitch but let's try not to think about that for now.

That's a good bit of bowling by Joe Root. He was spearing into those rough patches just outside the batsman's eye-line. Good pace and good trajectory. That's what England will be facing in their innings.
