With the score as it is can someone explain how this pitch is the absolute minefield everyone is banging on about? Or have we just bowled pies since lunch?

  2. Ind 225-2published at 66 overs

Shane is happy his message got to Chennai. It was a good first over from Root with plenty of encouragement from the chirpy Ben Foakes.

Root's first ball is missed by Rohit. The England skipper had grown six more grey hairs since he last missed one.

Shane has his wish. Root whips off his cap and is ready to go for the first time today.

England need some inspiration to break a partnership that is now worth 139. Joe Root is going through a few stretches. We may see the England captain shortly.

Surely I can't be the only person obsessing over the fact that there still hasn't been a single extra?! Andy Zaltzman must be getting very excited at the prospect of records being broken.

Oh no. Poor Dom Bess. Left out of the team and now a horrible fumble of fielding on the boundary edge gives Rohit a boundary. It's off his replacement Moeen but certainly wasn't intentional.

Bess could have done some damage to himself too. His knee stuck in the turf a la Simon Jones. It looks like someone has attacked the outfield with a shade-sized pitching wedge.

    Expensive over.

  10. Ind 213-3published at 63 overs

Stokes is Broad's only slip as the seamer runs in to Rahane in search of his 518th Test wicket. Every ball hits the middle of the right-hander's bat. Is the power of the headband wearing off?

  11. Ind 213-3published at 62.3 overs

Stokes has bowled two overs so far. He has not been seen since the 12th over.

I refuse to accept all hope is lost for any team 62 overs into day one. There's still a long way to go.

Stuart Broad, not at his best so far, returns.

I think England are doomed, I'm saying it early. This wicket, the way these two are playing, I've already seen patches on this pitch that Phil Tufnell would like; a lovely patch for Ravichandran Ashwin outside the off stump.

I hate to be a pessimist at this time in the morning but England are doomed.

  15. Ind 212-3published at 62 overs

    Rohit 138, Rahane 53

Ben Stokes beats the turf in frustration as Rahane edges one off Moeen wide of him. It was well out of his reach. I don't think a second slip would have got there.

Runs are coming easily with both batsmen keen to sweep.

Andy: Root/England have been looking for an excuse to get Mo back in the team. So far, apart from one magic delivery, he has been poor.

  17. Ind 207-3published at 61 overs

    Rohit 136, Rahane 50

I think Moeen has been OK. Nothing more, nothing less. Let's face it, we can talk about the decision to leave Bess out all day but there's no guarantee Bess would have bowled better. He bowled full toss after full toss on day five of the first Test.

Another maiden for Stone, who has 1-33 from 13 overs. He has been the standout performer.

    Phil Tufnell

I think Moeen has bowled quite well. He hasn't bowled full-tosses or short balls. He's been cut a few times but I think he's bowled a good pace and a good line.

There's a lot happening out there. There's reverse-swing, there's spin and yet India have over 200 with only three down.

A pat on the back from Rohit. A calm wave of the bat.

    Well played, Jinks.
