Just woke up tuned in punched the air with delight when I saw the headline root scores quick fire century. Then put my glasses on and realised it was Rohit.

Thanks Steph.
Rohit just kept on going in that session. More of a saunter than his early morning dash but irresistible nonetheless. Did the ball do just a little less there, or was I just distracted? Once the ball gets soft it seems a little easier to bat.
I'm off to change out of my pyjamas. Here's Matthew Henry...

Rohit makes batting look so easy. He looks to have all the time in the world. He is excellent to watch. He has time and balance.
Rohit 132, Rahane 36
Tea on day one, the end of India's session. They have added 83 runs without losing a wicket. England have bowled tidily and kept going in the field, but they desperately need a wicket.

Simon in Sheffield's Quiz related refusal to leave story reminded me I once refused to move when the quiz master of our local pub quiz insisted that the answer to "what is the most southerly Test Cricket ground in the UK" was Lords! I pointed out it wasn't even the furthest South in London but it took googling the answer to convince him.

Hmmm. If the turn wasn't enough, we've now got Olly Stone bowling scuttlers at nearly 90mph. Who knows what this pitch will be doing on days four and five. Stone has been excellent, mind. Pace high, accuracy good. Asking questions. Probably one more over before tea.

England have got to find wickets. You see the rate that India are scoring at, if they bat the day out, which they're looking like they will do, they'll be well past that 300 score.
England need to find that bit of magic. In past situations, when they've wanted that magic, Ben Stokes has produced it. So it's worth throwing him the ball.
Olly Stone is going to have a burst before the break. He'll probably only fit one over in before tea.

We're definitely seeing similarities from the last Test in that as soon as the ball gets past 30 overs old and the hardness has gone out of it, it's doing less. It does give England hope.
Rohit brings up the 100 partnership with a punch off the back foot through point for a couple. How different this game feels when compared to Virat Kohli's moment of complete bewilderment. England could perhaps do with one of Dom Bess' 'lucky' wickets.
Moeen is round the wicket, a decent move for an offie on a turner, more likely to bring leg before into the game. Still no maiden, though. We're 10 minutes or so from tea.

Rohit is a dangerous, dangerous player. I'd expect him to have a better Test record than he has.
Leach is bowling well. Accurate, decent pace, not unlike Monty Panesar when England won in India in 2012. Can Moeen support him? Mo hasn't managed a maiden so far today. Meanwhile, it looks chilly at The Oval...

I once refused to leave a Pub Quiz because the so-called Quizmaster insisted that an answer was correct when I knew it was wrong - doesn't everyone know that whilst Mercury is the closest planet to the sun it's Venus that's the hottest?!
Simon in Sheffield
After the nervous 90s, Rohit is ticking again, belting a slog sweep off Moeen for four. Ben Stokes hasn't been seen in a while. Is he fit enough to bowl the overs of a fifth bowler?

I was very fearful once I saw the pitch report and then I saw the toss go the wrong side of the coin. I realised then that this was going to be a harder Test for the England team.
If England win this game, from this pitch, it will be remarkable.
We're not even at tea on the first day, and I don't want to be pessimistic, but given the state of this pitch, England need a wicket pretty sharpish. There's no lack of effort. Stuart Broad extends his long legs to chase to the straight fence, diving and tipping the ball back. Commitment from the big fast bowler.

I'll be amazed if Ravichandran Ashwin doesn't open the bowling for India.
