Blimey! What a gripping day that was!

There is nothing to match County Championship cricket when you see days like this.

And, for all Dane Vilas did in keeping his cool to see Lancashire over the line, it might all yet count for nothing - and be trumped by Warwickshire tomorrow.

It all depends on how many runs the Bears can plunder in the morning, whether Somerset can be tempted to take on the run chase and whether the Edgbaston wicket starts to turn.

If Warwickshire win, they will be champions for the first time since 2012 and meet Lancashire in the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord's next week.

If Warwickshire don't win, Lancashire will be champions for the first time since 2011 and play Notts at Lord's, providing Notts knock off the remaining 132 they need to beat Yorkshire.

There are also other two matters to clear up too. Who finishes top of Div Three? Kent or Middlesex? And whether anyone can manage to take another wicket at The Oval after only eight so far in three days by Surrey and Glamorgan between them?

It should be a lot of fun, Join us again. 10:30 sharp.

    Leicestershire 222 & 211, Worcestershire 422 & 12-0

Daryl Mitchell finishes on a high in the New Road sunshine as he helps Worcestershire to victory on his final appearance.

Set 12 to win, Mitchell hits two of his first four balls off fellow veteran Chris Wright for four.

Then, following two singles from Jake Libby, another for Mitchell and one for Libby, that's game over.

Mitch gets a fabulous reception on his way back to the pavilion. A few more tears being shed, on an already emotional cricketing day.

Joey Burton: Just caught up on that game at Aigburth this afternoon. Wow. Again, nothing boring at all about red ball cricket. Imagine if Sky had taken any notice of the County Championship this week instead of merely focusing on the IPL, they'd have struck gold. #BBCCricket, external

    Lancashire 141 & 198-9 beat Hampshire 143 & 193 by one wicket

It's fair to assume there will be a few beverages sunk by the Lancashire players this evening. And thoroughly deserved after the match they and Hampshire have served up these last three days.

Who says County Cricket can't deliver excitement and drama? Not us!

  8. wicket

Leicestershire all out for 211published at 18:06 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Leicestershire 222 & 211, Worcestershire 422

Leicestershire are bowled out at New Road and that leaves Worcestershire needing 12 runs to win.

A job for the retiring Daryl Mitchell?

  9. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367 & 179-1, Somerset 389

Warwickshire end day three in Birmingham with a lead of 157.

Rob Yates is on 72 and skipper Will Rhodes on 42 - and tomorrow's first session looks like being a lot of fun.

If they can smash another 150 or so and set Somerset 300 to win, the Cider Boys may be tempted to go for it.

And, with the likes of Chris Woakes, Tim Bresnan and of course Danny Briggs down the order, the Bears have some big hitters to come.

Free admission, don't forget. It should be good.

  10. wicket

    Rhodes c Cox b Pennington 90published at 17:57 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Leicestershire 222 & 207-9, Worcestershire 422

Cruel blow for Worcestershire old boy George Rhodes back at New Road.

He is out just 10 short of what would have been a maiden century.

Leicestershire's last pair are in, the Foxes only lead by 11 runs - and the Pears are taking the extra half hour in the hope of forcing a three-day win tonight.

  11. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 & 42-1 v Yorkshire 73 & 396

Apologies to those of you wanting updates from Trent Bridge. We hope you understand that we had to concentrate on events at Aigburth.

After Adam Lyth's dismissal for 153, the Yorkshire tail took the second innings score to a very respectable 396 with Matthew Revis the last man out for 34.

That has left Nottinghamshire a target of 174 to win. Haseeb Hameed was out for four but the two Bens, Slater and Duckett, have batted positively as they have knocked 42 runs off that chase to end day three on 42-1.

  12. Runs flowing at Edgbastonpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367 & 169-1, Somerset 389

Rob Yates and Will Rhodes are really going for their shots.

This is suddenly more like a T20 game.

The Somerset Tom Toms, Abell and Lammonby are on - and it's doing nothing for their bowling figures.

    The 50 partnership comes up.

    One over left.

  13. Bears still building . . .published at 17:46 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367 & 144-1, Somerset 389

With all eyes on Edgbaston now, Warwickshire's lead build to 122.

Three overs left in the day now.

  14. Lancashire at Lord'spublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 198-9 beat Hampshire 143 & 193 by one wicket

One thing we do know from Lancashire's point after that dramatic victory. They can finish no lower than second in the table and so they will be in the Bob Willis Trophy Final at Lord's next week.

  15. Hearts in mouthspublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 198-9 beat Hampshire 143 & 193 by one wicket

From 177-5 and 187-6, Lancashire looked like they would get over the line with a little bit to spare. But to go from 177-5 to 194-9 showed that nerves were jangling with a run-out and a crazy decision from a number ten to take the bowling.

Crucially though, Vilas stayed in the middle. Other than the two balls at Matt Parkinson, Vilas' presence meant Lancashire were always favourites.

  16. Hard luck Hampshirepublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 198-9 beat Hampshire 143 & 193 by one wicket

Hampshire end up one wicket short of being County Champions. Their chance has gone.

Hard luck too to Mason Crane. The leg-spinner bowled brilliantly as he ended with 5-41, but he just didn't quite have enough runs to play with.

  17. Six overs left at Edgbastonpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367 & 126-1, Somerset 389

The shadows are lengthening at Edgbaston as the Warwickshire lead over Somerset goes past 100.

Six overs left tonight, then we could be in for a bit of a morning thrash tomorrow when the Bears will look to declare and set Tom Abell and his men a tempting enough target.

With that boundary, Dane Vilas has played one of the great captain's innings. He ends 47 not out to drag Lancashire over the line.

Dane Vilas sweeps Liam Dawson for four through midwicket and Lancashire have won!

    Hampshire's title hopes are over.

Lancashire have done what they can. Now they must hope Somerset prevent Warwickshire from winning at Edgbaston.

  20. wicket

    Sibley c Green b Davey 50published at 17:26 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367 & 119-1, Somerset 389

Dom Sibley is caught by Ben Green on the cover boundary.

50 and out for the England opener.

New man in is skipper Will Rhodes.

The Bears lead by 97 and, following news of Hampshire's dramatic demise by the banks of the Mersey, they have their County Championship title hopes back in their own hands again.

    Almost unBearable tension!
