  1. It's all gone quiet in Birminghampublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 345-8 (114 overs)

A little wind may have gone out of Warwickshire's sails now they have failed to get those three bowling points.

But let's not forget, if they win this game and Lancashire chase 196 to beat Hampshire, then it's the Bears' title. And the Red Rose have made a good start at Aigburth.

This can still go one of three ways!

  2. It's in Hampshire's handspublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 38-0 v Hampshire 143 & 193

The equation for Hampshire is now simple. WIN and they are County Champions.

But they have to take ten Lancashire wickets and the Red Rose opening pair of Alex Davies and George Balderson have made a good start.

If they score another 158 runs, they will win this match. And then would need Somerset to draw at Warwickshire to take the title.

  3. The 110th over . . .published at 13:23 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 334-8 (110 overs)

Jack Leach scampers a second off the second ball.

Josh Davey to face. And he does the job.

    The Bears fall short.

They end up with just two bowling points. It's back in Hampshire's hands again!!!

Fair play to Somerset for putting up such a determined effort.

In the wake of their string of embarrassments since the Championship restarted, the perennial County Championship bridesmaids have shown some steel. This is their highest score since July.

  4. wicket

WICKET Brook c Hutton b Paterson 42published at 13:18 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 261-5

Dane Paterson strikes in the second over after lunch at Trent Bridge.

Harry Brook tentatively prods at one and the ball comfortably goes to Brett Hutton at first slip to end a good partnership of 79.

  5. Woakes bowls number 109published at 13:16 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 333-8 (109 overs)

Three dot balls for Josh Davey so far off Chris Woakes in the 109th over . . .

Make that four, then a half-attempted single has Woakes trying to throw the stumps down.

    But they see it through.

Danny Briggs to bowl the last over before the cut-off.

    Any more 110th over magic?

  6. Somerset making a game of itpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 331-8 (108 overs)

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Somerset

For the second morning in succession, Somerset have been straining every sinew to deny Warwickshire the bonus point they need to ensure that they cannot be overtaken in the race for the County Championship, always provided they win this game.

But the chances of them doing so took a heavy knock when Lewis Gregory, after a determined, downright gritty 68, got himself out in the last over before lunch, playing across the line to Chris Woakes.

One more wicket in two overs is now the bonus point equation.

As for the bigger question - the outcome of this game - that is still very much in the balance, with all results possible.

    Lancashire 141 & 22-0 v Hampshire 143 & 193

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

Alex Davies gets us underway with a push to deep backward point for three as their chase resumes.

Fascinating insight from BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James about a chat he had with Hampshire spinner Liam Dawson. Dawson, who has played in all three formats for England, said that he had never felt as nervous walking to a ground as this morning.

The County Championship may have its detractors, but winning it is still a really special achievement and even more so for a county like Hampshire, who have not won it since 1973.

  8. Back under way in Birminghampublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 326-8 (107 overs)

Four more balls of Chris Woakes' over to complete - and new man in Josh Davey only laid a bat on one of them.

Three overs left. Danny Briggs to continue.

  9. Can we do it?published at 13:08 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Hampshire 143 &193, Lancashire 141 & 19-0

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

'Are we going to do it...?'

A question I've heard from both Lancashire and Hampshire fans throughout the lunch interval.

Supporters with earpieces in listening to the commentary, checking the score from Edgbaston and praying for either runs or wickets depending on which team colours you're wearing.

The game might yet still go into tomorrow, scoring rates have been slow and the light isn't great.

Either way we're in for a brilliant afternoon.

  10. Still a decent year for Durhampublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

BBC Radio Newcastle's Martin Emmerson on Durham's season

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The end-of-season summing-up of Durham's summer by BBC Radio Newcastle's Martin Emmerson following their two-day defeat by Gloucestershire came too late to include last night. So here it is now...

"In the end it was disappointing to see Durham end their season with a two-day defeat at Bristol but, until this match, only Essex had managed to beat them in the County Championship.

"There were plenty of positives to take and plenty of progress has been made. It was only the two defeats against Essex which robbed them of a Division One spot come the mid-season split. And Durham were the only side to beat Warwickshire in the first part of the season.

David Bedingham finished as Durham's top run scorer with 1,029

"David Bedingham was a joy to watch and led the country for much of the season, only for Tom Haines to pip him to 1,000 runs, while . Chris Rushworth has taken another 59 wickets and remains one of the best bowlers in the country at the age of 35.

"Michael Jones and Liam Trevaskis have also cemented places in the Championship team and with it new contracts. Trevaskis, as an all-rounding spinner is going to be some player. He's still only 22.

"Throw in the One Day Cup final as well and it's been a good year. Generally I feel they are a club on the up again and there's lots to be positive about."

  11. Sussex get their ducks in a rowpublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Derbyshire 465, Sussex 300 & 43-0

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

A new record set at Hove today for the highest team total in an innings including six ducks.

The previous best was 295 by New Zealand side Canterbury in a tour game against the MCC in 1922/23.

As far as this game is concerned Sussex have been forced to follow on.

Needing 165 to avoid an innings defeat, they are lunching on 43 without loss,

The pitch still looks a good one, but with increasing help for the spinners.

  12. Wickets in short supply at The Ovalpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Glamorgan 672-6 dec, Surrey 140-1

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

It’s now just seven wickets in seven sessions of play on a near-perfect batting surface at The Oval after Surrey made a solid start in ensuring they don’t lose to Glamorgan.

Openers Jamie Smith and Ryan Patel took 112 and 108 balls respectively to reach their half-centuries, although both survived chances when Eddie Byrom dropped Patel at slip off Michael Hogan on 33, and Hamish Rutherford could not cling on to a head-high Smith drive to mid-off when Callum Taylor was bowling.

But Byrom, bowling his first spell of loopy leg-breaks for Glamorgan, made an unlikely breakthrough just before lunch when Patel, on 62, edged him to David Lloyd - providing Glamorgan’s new recruit with his maiden wicket in the professional game.

Surrey have the in-form Hashim Amla at the wicket, with Ollie Pope to come, so should not be too daunted by the mountain of runs stacked up by the visitors who will hope the pitch shows more signs of wear by the close.

  13. Kent set tough target by Middlesexpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Middlesex 147 & 363, Kent 138 & 35-1

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London

Middlesex should be moving towards a victory, having set Kent a testing target at Canterbury on a pitch that has been offering a great deal of assistance.

It's been a match for the bowlers throughout. Only Mark Stoneman has put up a great deal of resistance with 50 in the first innings and a century in the second. In fact, Kent have only just nudged past Stoneman's aggregate in the match.

The sideways movement off the pitch and through the air has been less noticeable today but the bounce does appear to be becoming more inconsistent.

The reward for the winners will be the first Division Three title. Indeed, it is five years to the day since Toby Roland-Jones picked up a hat-trick at Lord's to claim the Division One title for Middlesex.

  15. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 252-4

The morning belongs to Yorkshire and Adam Lyth. The batter has gone from his overnight 74 to 112 as the Tykes have added 83 runs for the loss of just Will Fraine.

Nottinghamshire are still in the box seat as the visitors only lead by 29 runs, but this second innings is 90 overs old and there has been plenty of hard graft for the bowlers.

  16. wicket

Gregory lbw Woakes 68published at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 325-8 (106.2 overs)

Warwickshire strike again, right on the stroke of lunch.

Lewis Gregory is trapped right in front by a full-length ball from Chris Woakes and the England man, who has bowled superbly this morning, constantly beating the bat, finally has his reward.

Lunch will now be taken, as eyes turn again in Liverpool, like Sauron.

When they resume, Jack Leach and next man in Josh Davey will have to see out another 20 balls to deny the Bears that precious all-important third bowling point.

  17. Lunch at Aigburthpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 19-0 v Hampshire 143 & 193

And that Abbas over is the last of a fascinating morning session.

Lancashire have survived eight overs of the new ball and have chipped away at that total. They will resume after lunch needing 177 more to win this match.

  18. Close...but no cigar (part 2)published at 12:30 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 & 19-0 v Hampshire 143 & 193

Hampshire and Mohammad Abbas think they are in business here but George Balderson has not nicked him behind to the wicketkeeper.

    Tense times at Aigburth.

  19. Four overs left . . .published at 12:29 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 322-7 (106 overs)

Ooh err! Getting nervy here in Brum.

24 balls to go. Two wickets needed.

Woakes carries on . . . and Jack Leach off-drives him for a sumptuous three to near the long-off boundary

  20. Close . . . but no cigar!published at 12:26 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 318-7 (105 overs)

Chris Woakes is so close to getting out his outstretched left hand to a return catch from Lewis Gregory.

Instead Gregory survives and even sneaks a single off the last ball.

Briggs bowls to a field of only two close-in fielders, slip and short leg.
