WICKET Fraine lbw b Hutton 3published at 11:07 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 296 v Yorkshire 73 & 182-4

After a quiet opening at Trent Bridge, the Nottinghamshire bowlers have a wicket to celebrate.

Will Fraine had dug in for 30 balls but when he tries to whip one towards the short legside boundary, he is pinned in front of leg-stump by Brett Hutton.

Yorkshire still need 41 to make Notts back again as previous tweeter Steve Burton's masterplan starts to work!

Now that is what you call optimism!

  3. Not outpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 259-6

Huge LBW shout from Chris Woakes (and his supporting cast) against Lewis Gregory.

Not for me, says the ump.

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 176-8

First wicket of the morning at Aigburth.

Felix Organ tries to hit one through the legside as he is hit on the pads, and after a long appeal from Tom Bailey, the finger goes up.

Hampshire lead by 178 with two wickets remaining.

Bailey now has career-best figures of 6-26.

  5. Early changes at Edgbastonpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 251-6 (84 overs)

After just two overs (and a wicket), Tim Bresnan is taken off, to be replaced by Liam Norwell as the new ball is taken.

Same at the City End, where Chris Woakes came on after one over from captain Will Rhodes.

Having taken the new ball, as expected, the Bears are keeping everyone fresh. And they still have Craig Miles to use.

Norwell, in particular, looking very lively.

If things work out for the Bears, it could be that spinner Danny Briggs doesn't even get back on!

  6. First boundary of the daypublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 174-7

Felix Organ steers Tom Bailey past the despairing dive of Matt Parkinson through the covers for four and the first boundary of the day.

Hampshire have picked up 16 runs in six overs and the lead is now 176.

  7. What else is going on?published at 10:48 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

Aside from the two key top flight games, there is also the Nottinghamshire-Yorkshire game.

Although Notts cannot now win the title, they could still make the Bob Willis Trophy final next week at Lord's if they win and Warwickshire don't.

After yesterday's two two-day finishes, there is also a game going on in Division Two at The Kia Oval, where Surrey are replying to Glamorgan's run mountain.

And there are three games in Division Two, chief of which is the Kent-Middlesex game at Canterbury, which will determine who finishes top in the third tier.

Early strike for Tim Bresnan as he finds the edge of Steven Davies' bat - just an over after he had completed his 92nd first-class half-century.

Michael Burgess takes a comfortable catch.

The Bears have their second bowling point.

Wicket maiden for former England all-rounder Bresnan.

New man in is Craig Overton.

  10. Two overs gone in Brumpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 247-5

Two of those 33 overs are done, eight runs scored and no wickets. But the Somerset batsmen are still going for their shots. And that will encourage the Bears bowlers.

  13. Starting on time in Brumpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Warwickshire 367, Somerset 239-5

Umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and Russell Warren, the Warwickshire team and the Somerset overnight pair Steven Davies and Lewis Gregory are all ready.

Tim Bresnan to bowl the first ball . . . which is a dot!

A further reminder that it's free admission at Edgbaston for the next two days. If you can find a spare seat.

  14. All to play forpublished at 10:28 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    Lancashire 141 v Hampshire 143 & 158-7

So we still have a scenario where one of these teams could be celebrating by the end of the week or both could end up empty-handed.

What we do know is we will have a winner at Aigburth, and probably today.

When James Vince and Liam Dawson were batting serenely after tea last evening, Hampshire were huge favourites. But they lost both batters late on to give Lancashire a sniff.

The hosts must remove the last three wickets cheaply before facing a tough chase against Mohammad Abbas and Keith Barker, but the hope lives on.

While both teams will have one eye on Birmingham this morning to see if Warwickshire get those four Somerset wickets they need.

  15. Will we crown a winner today?published at 10:23 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

    TrophyImage source, ECB

There's every chance that, depending on the weather in Liverpool, the Lancashire-Hampshire game will not last the entire day.

Whichever of them wins would then leap clear of Warwickshire, who need to take 15 Somerset wickets to stand any chance of winning at Edgbaston.

But the crux of the matter is that they must take the first four of those wickets in today's first 33 overs to ensure they get the two bowling points they need to ensure that it is still in the Bears' own hands.

That would mean, if they then go on to win, they would be champions.

If they don't then they would need Lancashire to beat Hampshire.

    Confused? You will be!

Weather outlookpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

Well there has been some rain in Birmingham this morning, so it's only right that we check in with Simon King at the BBC Weather Centre for the all-important forecast.

Anyone heading to Aigburth definitely needs a coat as it looks much cooler today!

  17. Good morning and welcomepublished at 10:17 British Summer Time 23 September 2021

Welcome back. Glad you could join us on the penultimate day in the final round of this season's County Championship campaign.

One minor issue was settled yesterday. Who won Division Two? Or who finished seventh, whichever way you look at it.

Now, following Essex's success, it's the more serious business of who wins Division One that we have to concentrate on.

Covers off at EdgbastonImage source, Ged Scott - BBC Sport

Weather forecasts in Birmingham and Liverpool are mixed.

But the good news at Edgbaston is that, after some morning rain, the covers are off - and both Warwickshire and Somerset have been out there warming up.
