Well, that is not what I was expecting. Not out as the ball pitched just outside leg. It is marginal and Ben Stokes' face is a picture as he watches it on the big screen. He can't believe it. The ball might well have been sliding down leg, in any case.

Joshua da Silva misses with a big sweep shot off Leach and England go up as one. After a discussion, Joe Root calls for a review. This could be close...

With three back-to-back Test matches you have to look at the workload of the two bowling attacks. West Indies have played the same attack in all three Tests.

For England, Saqib Mahmood was not picked for the first one, and came in for the last two. Craig Overton was in then out, then back in again. West Indies' bowlers have had more in their legs, England should be fresher.

    Mayers 24, Da Silva 2

The excitement of early in the session has dissipated somewhat now. It has become more of a grind but, if nothing else, they are not giving West Indies any freebies. Overton's latest costs just a leg bye and a single for Da Silva, clipped through square leg.

Andrew Lytle: I have a horrible feeling that England will still be bowling at the West Indian tailenders this time tomorrow. They have this uncanny knack of struggling to finish off a batting team.

Nothing much in the way of turn for Leach. As expected, really.

Da Silva and Mayers both signal their intent to try and get after the spinner, the former with an attempted sweep shot that brings a leg bye and the latter with a booming cover drive that nearly sees him drag on.

A tidy start from Leach, though, just two from the over.

Time for some spin. Here comes Jack Leach. What can he get out of this surface?

Hot sunshine, soft ball, and hard work for England.

Mayers aims a violent hook shot legside off Overton and gets a boundary for it - through mid-off! Not where he was aiming but he'll be happy with the result.

Four more from the last, on one leg and pulled over mid-wicket. Conditions are just starting to look a little friendly for batting.

You can tell that the ball has got softer just by the sound off the bat.

Piemontemio: England have been criticised frequently for bowling too short, especially at home. In the first two Tests here, they bowled a little fuller, and began by doing so here this morning. Now they've gone a bit short and ironically it's worked.

Risky single taken first ball of Mahmood's latest! Mayers tucked the ball into the legside and set off but Da Silva would have been out by a mile with a direct hit!

That's the only run of another probing Mahmood. He is the bowler working away on a good length while the seamer at the other end, Overton for the time being, produces the chin music.

  14. WI 107-6published at 40.0 overs

Just as he was in the morning session, Overton is hammering the ball into the surface. Give it a couple of days and it wouldn't be a surprise to see such deliveries start taking chunks out of the pitch.

Chris Woakes comes out of the attack after a superb spell of 3-21 in seven overs post-lunch.

Mahmood gets through another maiden to Da Silva and is again a matter of centimetres away from a wicket. The last ball of the over is nicked by Da Silva but drops just short of Overton at gully.

Speaking of Overton, he's readying himself to bowl the next over.

This next hour could be one of the most crucial hours of the series. If England can bowl West Indies out with a lead of 50, that's a lot of runs to take into the second innings on this pitch.

England could hardly have asked for a better first hour after lunch. One dropped catch aside - and even that didn't prove costly - it has all gone to plan.
